December 2013 Newsletter
A Message from Mr. Gregory …
The holiday season is upon us. The next few weeks will be filled with many fun activities for our students and
their families. This time of the year can be demanding for students because they need to find a balance
between holiday preparation and school work to finish the semester. Our teachers, counselors, and other
school staff are here to provide resources to support you and your children.
The first semester ends in January. When students return from winter break, they will have eight days of
classes before final exams begin. The review day for the first semester is January 10th. Final exams begin
Monday, January 13th and run through Friday, January 17th. Monday, January 20th is a holiday and Tuesday,
January 21st is a professional day for teachers. The third marking period begins January 22nd. During the
final exam period, students need to report to school only for their scheduled exams. School buses operate on
a normal schedule. Additional information about the final exams is found in this newsletter. Please monitor
your student’s work closely to make sure all work is up-to-date.
Make-ups for students who need to take an HSA before the May session will take the assessments from
January 6th through January 9th. The students needing this assessment and their parents will be notified by
our testing coordinator, Ms. Williams.
Once we complete the first semester, we will begin the registration process for the 2014-2015 school year.
Sherwood High School will be hosting a registration information meeting for incoming 9th grade students and
parents and a course fair for current 9-11th grade students and parents on January 30, 2014 at 6pm.
We had an outstanding fall semester in terms of extracurricular activities and athletics. Our students were
involved in clubs, performances, competitions, games, tournaments and championship games. I want to
congratulate our students for the great honor they brought to Sherwood, themselves, and you by participating
in these activities. This newsletter contains some of the good news about our students.
Winter break begins at the close of school on Friday, December 20th. Students and staff return on Thursday,
January 2nd. The main and counseling offices will be closed during winter break. As we approach these
holidays, I want to wish our students, staff, and families much peace and happiness.
Principal Intern Practicum: Beginning, January 2, Mr. Allrich will assume the role of acting principal. Mr.
Allrich has done an outstanding job shadowing me since he arrived in July. During the first semester, he
slowly began assuming some of my responsibilities and I have been able to reflect with him. He is ready to
take over all of the responsibilities of a principal.
Mr. Allrich will be the acting principal, from January 2 until February 18. During that time, I will leave
Sherwood so that Mr. Allrich can take over the full responsibility of being a principal. Although I will not be on
campus, Mr. Allrich and I will continue to communicate regularly to ensure the smooth operation of the school.
When I leave the school in January, a visiting principal will be assigned to Sherwood to assist Mr. Allrich. Ms.
Tillie Garfinkle, the principal of Fairland Elementary School, will be assigned to our school. I am excited that
Ms. Garfinkle will work with Mr. Allrich and the Sherwood community for six weeks. She is a good friend and
an excellent educator. I know Ms. Garfinkle well because she and I have worked together for the past seven
years as principals in the same quadcluster.
During my absence, I will be a visiting principal at Lake Seneca Elementary School in Germantown. I am
excited about the opportunity to work in an elementary school. I feel I will gain a deeper understanding of
Curriculum 2.0 and the preparation students have for middle and high school.
I thank the Sherwood students, families and staff in advance for your support of Mr. Allrich during his
internship practicum. I have every confidence that our students will be well cared for during my absence. I
will miss our students and the entire Sherwood community during my absence and I look forward to my return
in February.

Semester exams are scheduled from January 13, 2014 through January 17. 2014. The review day for
exams is January 10, 2014. Semester exams for students are two hours in length for each period and
are given two per day.
Regular classes are not held on exam days. Students need to be in school just for their scheduled
exam. They may arrive to school at the time of their exam and they may leave after the exam (must
have own transportation). Students must stay in class for the duration of the exam.
School buses will run on their regular schedule in the morning and leave at their regular schedule in
the afternoon at 2:10 PM.
Students who opt to remain in school until 2:10 must remain in a supervised location and are not
allowed to leave school grounds.
Important Exam Information …

Exams are worth 25% of the final course grade.

Students are expected to take all their scheduled exams regardless of their semester average prior to
the exam. Any student who does not take a scheduled exam will receive a zero on that exam. In missing the
exam, the student is NOT meeting the course objectives, which may result in a forced final failure.

Students only need to attend during their exam time. Students are free to leave after their exam is
over for the day (must have their own transportation).

Students must take exams and complete any culminating activities during the periods listed on the
exam schedule.

Students may bring other materials (books, magazines, etc.) to an exam in case they finish the exam
early. Notes relating to the exam being taken may NOT be brought into the exam room. No electronic
devices are allowed. Students may not leave the room until the end of the exam period.

No student will be admitted to an exam after the official starting time.

The time between exams is lunch time. The students are NOT permitted to leave school grounds
unless they are finished with exams for the day. The cafeteria will be open for lunch.

The cafeteria will be available for students during unscheduled exam periods and for those who
remain for bus pick-up at 2:10 p.m.

Students must bring pens and #2 pencils, etc. to the exam room.

Students will clear from each class on the last day that the class is in session for the semester.

Students should take all exam-related materials home daily in case of an emergency that
necessitates the rearrangement of the exam schedule.
3
Make-Up Exam Procedures …
According to MCPS policy, students with unexcused absences may not receive credit for their work.
Therefore, it is important for any student who is absent on a scheduled exam day to follow these procedures
to ensure the absence is excused:

Teachers need to be aware of student absences. Parents should contact the main office (301-9243200) by 7:25 a.m. on the day of the absence to notify the school.

Upon returning to school, the student must bring an absence note signed by a parent to the main
office or the student may not receive credit for the exam.

It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for the make-up exam either during the scheduled exam
make-up period or at a time mutually agreed upon by the teacher and student.
Semester Exam Emergency Plan For School Delay or No School …
TWO-HOUR DELAY: If an emergency delays the opening of school by two hours, we will still have both
scheduled exams. The schedule will be as follows:
First Exam
9:25 – 11:35
Lunch
11:35 – 11:55
Second Exam
12:00 – 2:10
CANCELLATION: If school is canceled one day during exam week, the missed exams will be made up the
next school day and the exam schedule will be shifted accordingly. For example, if school is closed for the
period 1 and 2 exams on Friday, those exams will be given the first day back to school. If school is closed for
two days or more, the school system will determine a revised schedule, which will be broadcast via radio and
TV and posted on the school system website.
REVIEW DAY: If school is closed on Review Day, the review will be held the first day back to school and the
exam schedule will be adjusted accordingly.
Obligation Clearance/Collection Procedures …
Financial obligations must be cleared by students with the Financial Specialist before or after school, or
during lunch. Checks should be made payable to "Sherwood High School". If a student has an obligation
issued by the Media Center for library materials, the obligation may be cleared at the Media Center or
Business Office. If a student has an obligation for lunch money owed to the cafeteria, the obligation must be
cleared by the Cafeteria Manager.
Please remind students to bring their textbook(s) or a check for the cost of the textbook(s) to the exam.
Students will be issued an outstanding financial obligation if they do not return their textbook(s) or submit a
check for the cost of the textbook(s).
Change in Policy for Retaking Courses …
At the beginning of the school year, Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) revised its policy (Regulation
IKC-RA) regarding students retaking a course. In the past, if a student retook a course, both grades
appeared on the transcript and were included in the student’s overall grade point average (GPA) and
weighted grade point average (WGPA).
Beginning with the Class of 2014, students in grades 9 through 12, who take a course and then retake it, no
matter the final grade, are allowed to exclude the lower of the two grades from their transcript and their
4
GPA/WGPA. The highest of the grades received will be the only grade that appears on the transcript for that
course.
The mark exclusion applies only to two occurrences of the same exact course with the same exact course
code. For example, grades for on-level courses may not be used to exclude grades for honors-level courses.
When scheduling students for classes, requests to retake a course will be honored only when there in room in
the course. Students taking the course for the first time will always have priority.
Your students’ counselor will be able to provide supports to you regarding retaking a course. Please work
with the counselor in all instances where a student plans to retake a course. Once the course is complete,
the student and the counselor will need to complete the MCPS Form 560-55: Notice of High School Mark
Exclusion and submit it to the registrar.
Promotion Policy …
In order to earn the required credits to achieve a Maryland diploma in four years, students should earn a
minimum number of credits in specific disciplines each year. The chart below shows the expected number of
credits needed to move to the next grade level. In order to become a senior, a student must earn a minimum
of 15 course credits, including at least three in math, three in English, two in science, and two in social
studies. The student must also have successfully completed the HSA courses.

*Schools will ensure that students take the HSA during the May administration while enrolled in an HSA
course.
Automated promotion or retention will occur in early July each year if course credits are earned as above.
Automated adjustment of grade level will also occur after summer school grades have been recorded.
Automated grade level is adjusted at end of first semester through August of senior year. Adjustments may
be made manually by the school during student’s fourth year as appropriate.
In alignment with current practice, the principal, in consultation with counselor and parent/guardian, has the
flexibility to change a grade level placement when unusual circumstances prevail.
Student Service Learning (SSL) …
Please make sure the activity is pre-approved beforehand. If not, a “special activity form” must be approved
by Ms. Reiff and signed before the activity. Students will not receive student service learning hours for
activities that have not been pre-approved.
Students can earn student service hours in a number of ways:
 Successful completion of courses that have automatic SSL hours attached. These courses are
identified in the MCPS Course Bulletin.

Participation in service-learning activities sponsored by school clubs or organizations. The advisor
verifies the SSL hours.
5

Participation in activities with nonprofit organizations that are pre-approved for SSL. MCPS Form
560-51 Student Service Learning Activity Verification is required to verify the service.

Participation in service learning activities sponsored by nonprofit organizations not identified on
www.mcpsssl.org as pre-approved for SSL but are approved 2 weeks in advance of the activity by the
SSL coordinator with the MCPS Form 560-50, Application for Student Service Learning Special Activity.
SSL first semester hours are due January 10, 2014. Completed Student Service Learning forms
must be given to Ms. Reiff in H244.
For more information about SSL visit www.mcpsssl.org for comprehensive SSL program information.

on the student’s permanent record or report card or transcript.
If the student withdraws after the 25th school day of the semester in which the class begins, a notation of
“W,” or “Withdrew,” the date of the withdrawal, and the average grade at the time of withdrawal will be
entered on the permanent record, transcript, and report card. (Withdrawal grades are not used in computing
GPA or WGPA. However, they are included to determine student academic eligibility for participation in
extracurricular activities.)

Department News …
Library Media Center: During exam week the Library Media Center will be open to students from 6:45 AM –
2:10 PM.
English Department: Our department is offering more and more extra-curricular opportunities for students
this year. In November, we hosted Casey Caliba, an actor and director in the Shakespeare Company at the
Folger Library, for an acting workshop with our junior and senior students. Also in November, some of our
sophomore students had the opportunity to attend The Odyssey at the Olney Theatre. On December 5th, we
will induct 110 students into the National Honor Society.
Science Department: AP Environmental Science students have all completed their Chesapeake Bay
fieldtrips and spent time assessing the health of the bay. Students had an opportunity to test the water
chemistry, dredge for oysters, do some crabbing, discuss human impacts on the watershed, and immerse
themselves in a salt marsh. We will be using our experiences to guide restoration projects like raising
rockfish and salt-marsh grasses in the K-Wing courtyard.
The Environmental Horticulture Pathway students have designed and built hydroponic systems that they are
using to grow lettuce crops. The students have also been using commercial hydroponic systems to grow a
variety of vegetables, and they enjoyed some of the lettuce harvest before Thanksgiving. Since August,
students have been growing poinsettias along with flowering Christmas Cactus, cyclamens, and beautiful
Amaryllis plants. These plants are now for sale. For more information, contact Jill Coutts.
The Sherwood Chemistry Club partnered with the Sherwood Best Buddies for a colorful fall activity tie-dyeing
t-shirts! In addition, Chemistry Club members conducted fun demos and other chemistry-related activities
with a Thanksgiving theme on November 19. This fall activity is one of the activities Mr. Miehl, the Chemistry
Club advisor, applied for and won a grant from the American Chemical Society for materials to conduct these
fun, educational, and collaborative activities with the Sherwood Best Buddies.
Social Studies Department: Our department has had an exciting school year so far. Many classes have
attended a variety of field trips to great places such as, the White House, C & O Canal, and the National
Gallery of Art. The National History Honor Society, Rho Kappa, inducted a large number of students this fall,
all of whom met and exceeded the national standards for entrance. The department was also excited to, not
only participate, but win the “Battle of the Departments” can food drive to benefit Olney Help. The
department would like to thank all students and parents who sent in cans to their first period classes. Those
first period classes will be receiving a free breakfast sponsored by the SGA. Finally, the department is
excited to announce the availability of two new courses for the 2014/2015 school year: AP Human
Geography and Ancient and Medieval History.
World Language Department: We are eagerly anticipating the arrival of 11 Spaniards in September 2014
as part of our Spanish exchange with La Ginesta School in Castelldefels, Barcelona, Spain. Twelve of our
students will be traveling to Castelldefels to experience life and culture in Barcelona, Spain in March of 2015.
Nineteen Sherwood students are preparing for our annual French Exchange with Mr. Falls and Ms. Coogan
second semester. Students will live with French families in the suburb of La Valentine in Marseille, France.
Students will attend classes each day and also visit Les Calanques, Cassis, Avignon and Nîmes. The
exchange will end with two days in Paris to visit the Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, and other cultural attractions.
Spanish Honor Society News: We held a clothing drive throughout the month of November. Clothes are
going to be shipped to Ecuador and will be used towards dental patients who are also in needs of clothes.
Over 20 bags of clothes were collected. http://ecuadent.org

Sherwood High School PTSA …
The PTSA has gotten off to a wonderful start this year with some great programming. In September, we
had a great discussion on Cyberbullying and Internet Safety presented by Steve Chaikin of the State's
Attorney's Office. October, Mr. Gregory and Mr. Allrich gave an informative overview on Sherwood's
School Improvement Plan. In November, we had a tremendous turnout for our College Prep program in
which some very useful information was presented by admissions counselors and previous Sherwood
graduates. And we are only halfway through the year! The PTSA has so much more to offer students
and parents after the winter break. Please look for our upcoming programs and meetings on the
Sherwood High School PTSA listserv, you won't want to miss out.
Happy Holidays to everyone! Hope you all have a wonderful winter break. I look forward to seeing you at
our next PTSA meeting on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 7:15 pm in the Media Center.
Thank you,
Sharon St. Pierre
PTSA President
