Important things TO DO…
Starting January 1st of student’s HS senior year…





Parents should file their previous year’s taxes as soon
as possible.
Apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov (both the student
AND one parent)
Seniors must file a FAFSA (Free Application for
Federal Student Aid) at www.FAFSA.ed.gov using the
PINs as the electronic signatures to submit online
Seniors submit a Cal Grant GPA Verification Form to
be eligible for the Cal Grant (www.calgrants.org)
File a CSS Profile @ www.collegeboard.com (Only
necessary for certain private colleges/universities)

Tips on Supporting Students
• Open and honest conversations about college possibilities, especially
any financial limitations or geographic restrictions, are best had early in
the process.
• Listen to your child: It is important to understand what your student
wants in a college experience.
• Offer more support, less influence…
• Applying to college: use a balanced approach to parental involvement.
