Antigone Summative Name: _______________________ Period: ___ Prompts for Antigone Assignment Option 1: Scenario: It’s October of 2013, the day after the Lincoln High School Centennial celebration. Two sisters, both LH seniors, stand outside the Lincoln bowl. Antigone, though smart and capable, is a super senior. Her younger sister, Ismene, is on pace to be valedictorian. In the fall of 2011 one of their brothers, Eddie, was killed in the Afghan War by what turned out to be, after a protracted investigation clouded by secrecy, friendly fire. Their other brother, Poly, who also enlisted to fight, went AWOL and has been communicating with the press in protest over the way the government handled his brother’s death (lying, manipulating, stalling). He now believes the war is unjust and he has become a belated Conscientious Objector. Both brothers are also LHS alums. Antigone was invited to speak at the Centennial celebration. Before her speech she was instructed by the principal and the Superintendent to honor her brother Eddie for his supreme sacrifice, but under no circumstances to make any mention of her brother, Poly. Hymie, the principal’s son, is a senior and is in love with Antigone. The principal’s name is Mr. Kreon. 1. It’s the day after the big event. What happened? Using all 4 characters, write a 4 page scene via dialogue in which you dramatize what has occurred and what the consequences may be. One of your goals is to come as close as possible to paralleling Sophocles’ play; that is, no one else should die, but some transgression has occurred for which Antigone must pay dearly. No sci-fi scenarios here, Stephen. Shoot for as much realism as you can muster). 2. You must also include at least 25 lines for the Chorus (split into at least 2 portions). All 4 of your characters/ actors will don the simple masks which you have created (with straws and construction paper and tape, glue, etc., which I will provide) during the chorus recitations. 3. Chose 3 classmates as actors/ reader, plus yourself. No one should refuse when asked to read/play a part. 4. Due Friday, March 22nd at start of class. Performances begin Friday, March 22nd. EXCEEDS MEETS APPROACHES BEGINNING Argument Strong and convincing argument throughout. Argument is evident and consistent. Little to no evidence of argument. Creativity Surprising turn of events, well told in this modern setting Clever parallel to Sophocles’ play. Obvious care was taken in construction; masks enhance performance. Some surprising turns of event. Argument is hard to follow; confusion still dominates. Events are largely predictable—no surprises. Almost no parallels to original play. Slap-dash at best Realism & Believability Masks Some parallels to original play evident. Masks do not detract from performance Little to no evidence that author tried. No parallels evident between plays. No masks Option 2: Essay: Write a persuasive essay in which you compare and contrast some modern day example of civil disobedience with Antigone’s example: a. 2 legitimate sources used and identified in your bibliography, properly formatted. b. 5 citations used from those sources. c. 900 word minimum. Antigone Summative Name: _______________________ Period: ___ d. Remember: the modern example need not be the same as Antigone’s, but you must describe the differences and similarities clearly. e. Due Friday March 22nd at end of class. Exceeds Strong Intro with clear opinionated thesis. Meets Strong Intro with clear Thesis Approaches Thesis vague and or not opinionated. Text Evidence, correctly cited, in fully developed body paragraphs Claims supported by strong text evidence & properly cited in 3 or more fully developed body paragraphs. Most claims are supported by strong evidence and properly cited in at least 3 fully developed paragraphs Claims mostly unsupported by text evidence and or not properly cited in less than 3 fully developed paragraphs. Conclusion Not merely a rehash of material. New insight included which bring essays to higher level. Not merely a rehash of material. Some new insight added. Rehash of material; nothing new is added. Parallels Modern example a strong parallel to Antigone’s Civil Disobedience Parallel between modern and ancient civil disobedience obvious Parallel vague at best Intro Thesis Statement Beginning No thesis statement evident. No clear intro to essay. Few or no claims with little text evidence and not properly cited. Body paragraphs not developed. No conclusion; the essay merely stops as if the author abandoned it. No parallels evident
