1 John Doe Speech 101 Section # 0131 Demonstration 11/16/2010 I:Introduction A: It is said, that food is the way into everyone’s heart i. We live in a culture where food is considered a national pass time where once, lunches and dinners ruled, but now, the dessert is making its way into becoming the ultimate choice of quality time food. B: During the intimate time we spend with friends and loved ones, it seems to be that conversation takes place more often at coffee shops over coffee and dessert, as oppose to a full course meal at a restaurant. C: For the past 10 years, I have had the great opportunity to learn how to prepare delicious desserts from a variety of people in my life, such as my mother, grandmother, and my mother in law, and thus, gained a substantial amount of appreciation for the art of dessert preparation as well as the social benefits of it. D: While we also live in an ever growing health conscious society, fruit sushi is an eye candy and a healthy way for one to satisfy their sweet tooth. E: Through this speech, I would like to share with you all what are the numerous benefits of the ingredients in this marvelous dish, how everyone can easily incorporate it into their lifestyle, and demonstrate how the incredible dessert is prepared. 2 II: The ingredients in fruit sushi offer many health and body benefits. A: Looking at this dish from a nutritional, as well as from a scientific standpoint, every ingredient harbors its own unique quality and has its unique effect on the human body. i: Healthful properties of blueberries, almonds, dark chocolate, pomegranate juice or syrup, walnuts, raspberries, cinnamon has increased significantly..…earning them designations such as "magic food," or super stars, according to Decision Analyst's "Health and Nutrition Strategist (Swann, 2010). ii: Berries, naturally rich in polyphenols, are a valuable resource for combating elevated blood sugar response…..also, blueberries are associated with better brain and memory function.(Swann, 2010 ) iii: Pomegranate juice polyphenols can help increase heart health protection for diabetics.(Swann, 2010 ) iv: Just one small square of chocolate a day can lower blood pressure and reduce heart disease risk…lower risk of having a heart attack or stroke.(Swann, 2010 ) v: One apple a day could reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer. (Nursing Standard. 2010) B: Nutritionists agree that eating foods high in fiber, vitamins and minerals and low in fat is important. (Masci, 2001) C: The benefits of increasing the consumption of these fruit’s will overall better ones health and lower risks of disease. 3 III: It is truly easy to incorporate fruit sushi into our lives. A: Our body’s collect and store vitamins from the different fruits and converts it into energy. i: Energy derived from these ingredients gives the ability to perform at a higher level in every aspect of life. B: We have an increasingly easy access to healthy verity of food and the availability of it has grown tremendously in the last decade. i: Manfred Kroger, professor of food science at Pennsylvania State University says, “Over the last 10 or 15 years, the number of produce items (Safeway) offers has grown rapidly as people have come to understand how healthy fruits and vegetables are for them….. Indeed, a growing number of Americans realize that what they eat may determine the length and quality of their lives. People are beginning to understand that food is important, and not just for nutritional purposes,” (Mann & Dagfinn 2010) ii: If you're betting on berries -- or simply enjoy them -- head for the frozen-food aisle. In an important way, frozen berries are actually fresher (Martin,1) C: Being able to simply combine everything together in one snack, helps to easily increase the intake of all of the fruits, spices, and fiber the body needs. IV: The preparation of fruit sushi is quite easy and fun. The dough must be ready to roll and the fruit must be washed, dried, and cut into small pieces. A: First we take a thin strip of crape dough to start the process. 4 i: Then, you lay it flat down with the light side facing up. ii: You need to flatten it by circling your hand on the dough to make sure there are no creases nor any air bubbles under the dough. B: Secondly, you should us a flat spat Chula and take a scoop of the Nutella chocolate and spread it all over the crape. C: Now in a separate bowl, you should mix in the different fruits and berries. i: Concerning fruits and berries D. Masci in 2001, author of “Can certain foods fight disease?” states a number facts about these food items beginning with apple which are high in fiber” aids in digestion and help alleviate constipation and Diarrhea”( Masci 2001). ii: As I am adding other fruit to the mix, he also states that pineapple is “thought to have an anti-inflammatory effects that help arthritis”(Masci 2001). iii: Add the oranges, you should know that “oranges contain vitamin …calcium and potassium. The high levels of vitamin C in oranges make them particularly effective in helping the body fight infections” (Masci, 2001). iv: You can add red grapes “which lower blood pressure” (Masci, 2001). v: Now, you can add in the berries, “Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and their kin all contain high amounts of cancer-fighting antioxidants. Strawberries have more vitamin C than oranges and are also high in fiber. Berries also help strengthen blood vessels” (Masci 2001). 1. As measured in laboratory tests, blueberries were No. 1 on the 5 antioxidant list until pomegranates claimed the top spot a few years ago”(Martin, 1 ). . iii: Now to make the process more interesting, you can add into the mixture condensed milk, a few pinches of cinnamon, and the diced walnuts or almonds, “almonds and many other nuts are high in vitamin E, which may help prevent heart disease. Almonds also contain high levels of calcium and magnesium, which help maintain strong bones” as stated by Masci (Masci,2001). iv: Now, you should stir together well to get a good mix of all the fruits and berries in a spoonful scoop. D: For one of your final steps, you take a few spoonfuls of the fruit mixture lay it across the crape in a line. i: You should make sure line of fruit is about 2 centimeters wide and laid across the top half of the crape. E: Take your fingers and hold the crape from the top and begin to roll it into a funnel. F: Be careful at this point, you take a sharp knife and cut the roll into 1 inch segments. G: Now for your pleasure, you can sprinkle powdered sugar on top and drizzle a bit of pomegranate syrup on top and around the dish. V: The sushi fruit dessert is healthier and medically more beneficial than other treat items. A: It has now made its way into our cultural pass time as a choice of food. 6 B: Many fruits help prevent and treat certain diseases and increase health. C: These ingredience offer many benefits, are easily available to be incorporated in any hectic life, and is simple to prepare.
