Third Sunday of Easter
MEMORIES
Two years ago, following the death of my youngest sister at the age of 37, I felt the need
to be surrounded with reminders of her life and accomplishments. Her final months spent battling
an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis were months when her body simply wasted away. After
her death I felt a strong need to place photos in my office cubicle and in my home—photos
showing my sister in her earlier years as a vibrant, healthy, and sparkling young woman.
About a year after my sister’s death, I was visiting another sister and noticed that she had only two photos of our
late sister in her home. One photo had been taken years earlier and showed our sister as a vital young woman. The other
was taken a few months before her death. In that photo, she was in her wheelchair, pale, thin, and feeble. My sister told
me that she always wanted to be reminded of the health and the sickness and death, since these were the realities that
made our late sister who she really was. This was a moment of great insight for me. Now when I remember my sister, I try
to remember her from images of her strong years, as well as images of her final months and dying days. The totality of
these images makes up who my sister was.
REMEMBERING DURING THE EASTER SEASON
The Easter season gives us many opportunities to remember the totality of what God has done for us. Today, two
weeks after Easter, the scripture writers urge us to remember the whole event of the paschal mystery—Christ’s passion,
death, and resurrection. This is important because every one of us who is baptized has a share in that mystery. We are
constantly called to die to sin and rise to renewed life in Christ Jesus.
Today’s Readings: Acts 3:13–15, 17–19; Psalm 4:2, 4, 7–9; 1 John 2: 1–5a; Luke 24:35–48

Pastor’s Corner
Dear Parishioners,
Have you ever traveled fromm home and
realized you had forgotten something important?
What would make you turn around, travel all the
way back, to retrieve it? Our gospel from St. Luke
begins with two disciples of Jesus returning 7 miles
at night back to Jerusalem to share with the others
an experience they had and after telling their story
being rewarded with another appearance of Jesus.
This is the challenge of our liturgy this weekend to
hurry out and tell others of our experience of the
risen Christ! What has your experience of the risen
Lord been? Having trouble with that question? It
should be easy for us, but often the fear of rejection
or our own uncertainty of our experience
discourages us. The apostles and disciples were
afraid also, but they were unable to contain their
message. It should be the same for us and when it
becomes difficult we like them, have the Spirit
within us to set us on fire. The Spirit has been sent
to renew the face of the earth, this is the day the
Lord has made let us be glad and rejoice in it!
We need each other to encourage us in our
proclamation of the risen savior. We need you to
spread the word. Invite your brothers and sisters
back home. We need folks to step forward and
offer service to the community in the various
ministries of the Liturgy. Do you like to sing, but
you are not comfortable in front of a group of
people? Would you like to read the Scriptures at
Mass? Maybe you would like to simply bring up the
gifts or take up the 'collection'? How about serving
at Mass or greeting folks as they come in? I need
you, I can't do it all and it is our mission here and
now!!! Let's do this, let's proclaim the presence of
Christ and experience that presence even more!
God Bless you in everything you undertake for God
and for the Body of Christ, the Church.
Fr. Tully

A Prayer for Our Troops”
Dear Lord… We thank you for the lives and service of
our men and women in the Armed Forces. Strengthen
them and give them guidance as they stand in harm’s
way to protect our nation and way of life. May they face
each day of their service the same way Your Son Jesus
did: with courage dignity and faith. And if it be Your
will when their work is through bring them safely home.
Lord please also bless the families of our troops.
Reward them generously for their sacrifices which are
known only to You. May we never forget those who
have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and safety:
those who have died in the service of our country. May
they rest in peace forever with You in Your kingdom.

Every person should have a special cemetery lot in
which to bury the faults of friends and loved ones.
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake
has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32
Confirmation strengthens the gift of sanctifying
grace we receive in Baptism. It unites us more fully
to the Church. It gives us a special strength of the
Holy Spirit to share our faith as witnesses of Christ
and to never be ashamed of the cross or our faith.
During the Sacrament of Confirmation, prayers are
said that God will pour out his Holy Spirit so that we
may be more like Christ by the way we live our lives.
Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868
when flowers were placed on the graves of Union
and Confederate soldiers. On this day we honor
all who have died in service to our nation. Please
take a moment to reflect and pray.

St. Michael and St. Francis Xavier Sacrament
Preparation: A child (grade 1 through high school)
must be enrolled and attend Faith Formation classes the
YEAR BEFORE and YEAR of receiving the Sacrament
of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation..
Baptism of children under school age requires the
parents to meet with the pastor before the sacrament is
received.
Remember Faith is a gift from God. Faith Formation
is a life-long growth process. We encourage parents to
attend Mass with their children this enables the children
to integrate what they learn in their Faith Formation
classes with weekly participation in the liturgy.
If your child is absent on Sunday morning, please give
the office a call at 256-3503. If your children have been
absent, please contact the catechist to keep up with their
current assignment.
St. Michael and St. Francis Confirmation Update
Confirmation deepens our relationship with God and
strengthens us to live lives of faith and mission. As a
parent you will want to talk with your son or daughter
about preparation for the celebration of Confirmation.
If you will be a junior or senior in the next 2013-2014
year, and have attended Faith Formation classes or a
Catholic High School and are currently enrolled in class,
you will be eligible to be confirmed. We need another
catechist for preparation for Confirmation, if interested
talk to Juliann. The first planning meeting will be June
5th at 6:00pm in the Rectory Chapel. If you are an adult
wanting to be confirmed, please contact Juliann to
register for the RCIA class starting in August.
The Sacrament of Confirmation will join you more
closely to the Church and will give you the special
strength of the Holy Spirit, which will help you
believe and share your faith with others in word and
action.
We welcome our new families to the program. If your
child is absent on Sunday morning, please give the office
a call at 256-3503. If your children have been absent,
please contact the catechist to keep up with their current
assignment.

Later in the summer we will begin a program to help Anglos
and Latinos to get to know one another. We will be asking
families to voluntarily pair up with another family. On a
regular basis (weekly) the pairs will be asked to share together
in some way. Perhaps attend mass together, have a cookout,
go to Charlestown State Park, or simply stop by for a visit.
There will occasionally be organized opportunities for the
family pares to share with all of those in the program on a
parish level. Our goal is to nurture understanding and unity
among our parishioners.
Catholic Home Missions: The Appeal primarily supports
home mission dioceses, that is, those dioceses in the United
States that are unable to offer their people the basic pastoral
ministries of word, worship, and service without outside help.
It may also give grants to other dioceses in the U.S. for
particular projects, and to organizations and religious
communities engaged in missionary work.
The Subcommittee funds a wide range of pastoral services.
However, it principally focuses on (1) evangelization
activities, (2) religious education, (3) ministry training for
priests, deacons, religious sisters and brothers, and laypeople;
(4) support of poor parishes across the country.
