You don’t have to go far to see the open fields full of crops and at this time of year see the farmers busily harvesting, ploughing and sowing. It is a wonderful picture of rural England. But behind the idyllic scenes there is the unseen world of people working hard in the agricultural and food industry, long hours, intense work and economic challenges. In my conversations I have learned of the pressures many are facing in that industry. In our churches and our schools we are celebrating this month the season of harvest. This is an opportunity to reflect on where our food comes from and to give thanks for all the many people actively involved in its production and supply. The British Food Fortnight, 18th September to 3rd October, provides an opportunity to go along to events to learn about the food industry, sample foods and give support to local producers. When we go into a supermarket there is an overwhelming supply of food products from around the world which can cause us to lose the seasonal sense of food, as everything is now available at any time of year. To read the country of origin on the product can be a surprise as it highlights the interdependence of the world. This harvest therefore let us rejoice and celebrate the abundance of the earth’s resources, the interdependence and show our gratitude to those whose work produces and supplies our material needs. But at the same time, our TV screens bring to us images and details of so many places where people are starving, material resources are inadequate and millions suffer and die from malnutrition and the absence of food, water and shelter. This raises fundamental questions about the more equal distribution and sharing of the earth’s resources. Harvest time is an opportunity for us all to do something positive to help this difficult world situation. Why not miss out on a meal, or omit non essential items, or stop buying unnecessary products, save the money and then send it to a charity which is supporting those parts of our world in such desperate need? If every household gave a small amount, then together it can have a great impact and there are many charities to choose from. Harvest time is also a time to remind ourselves that, although the food and our material possessions are the work of human hands, our Christian faith proclaims that it is God who is the Creator. Our gratitude and thanksgiving is therefore to God as well as to people. As the hymn reminds us: All good gifts around us, are sent from Heaven above, Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love. Our thanks to all those who supported, both by attending and for all the help provided. Harvest Festival is on October 8th and the traditional supper will follow the service. It is hoped to have a quiz night later in the year, the date will be announced as soon as the details are known. St Giles church, along with many other small parish churches, struggles to keep on top of its financial responsibilities and one way to help keep a head above water is to hold as many fund raising events as possible. So far we have just about managed to stay out of the red and a large part of this is due to the support we have received from people in the village, and elsewhere, at the various fund raisers held. We hope to continue to provide enjoyable functions in the future with your continuous support. E-mail - thelink2010@ymail.com Page 7 We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who support the events, not only for their financial contributions but for their “hands on” help too, it is much appreciated by all on the PCC. It is because of this generosity that the church keeps going and remains open. It is hoped that this may long continue to be. Many thanks. The weather was pleasant and there was a good turn-out of picnicking spectators and athletes from Bielby, Burnby, Hayton and Nunburnholme. The event was won by Bielby, who will host it next year. The Big Barn Dance, held at Low Farm on 14th August, was a very enjoyable and well-supported event. Our hosts, Phil and Marlene and family, did a wonderful job. The band was brilliant, the food excellent and even the weather was kind. As well as being a very happy, sociable event, it raised a net total of £891.13 towards the new heating system and other essential purposes for the church. The churchyard is looking neat and tidy again thanks to the hard work of Amy and Emily’s Lifestyle team, who weeded, gravelled and generally cleaned up the old gravestones and the periphery of the church. They did an excellent job. Thanks are also due to the (anonymous) village residents who cleaned up the telephone box and repaired the bus shelter; the improvement is enormous and deserves to be acknowledged. On December 4th Richard and Ann Webster plan to host another Wine Tasting event at Totterdown Farm House; further details nearer the time. There are already plans afoot for 2011. On the weekend of June 24-26th we hope to hold a Flower Festival and Art Exhibition in St James’ church, and the ever-popular Safari Supper is scheduled for 30th July. Again, further details will be available nearer the time. Hello - over Bank Holiday weekend we visited St.Ethelburga, Gt. Givendale, from where I picked up your Link. In 2008 we stayed at the Hollies in Shiptonthorpe and discovered that the land adjoining had been known as Little Cleavin. This being my family name and my brother is our family tree fanatic I was thrilled. The Cleavin family had lived in the Londesborough area for a number of centuries before the land was passed to this family. We made contact with the couple now living on what was renamed Holmfield for a number of years. We have been unable to ascertain any information about the past history of this particular piece of land, which is a 'missing link'. I wondered if anyone reading your Link, as it covers a large area, would be able to lead us in the right direction to find out more. We absolutely loved the area where this beautiful Church is placed, the only sound was the twitter of birds, unusual not to hear traffic as is the case where I live. Many thanks if you can help, but do not worry if you cannot. Jean Forbes. Please e mail Jean direct. jeanforbes@hotmail.co.uk. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. 'I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.' The old woman smiled, 'Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?' 'That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them.' For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.' Moral: Each of us has our own unique flaws. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them. So, to all of my cracked pot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path! This year a good turnout of villagers and friends enjoyed a fine day on Aug 1st. The day's events followed previous year's pattern with something for all whether participating or watching. The Hill Race got things off to a good start. During the morning various items were left at the Village Hall for the judging of produce. These were later auctioned (proceeds going to the Village Hall Fund). The afternoon's events included children's sports & fancy dress competition, maypole dancing, Millington Men's Morris Team (a display which is always eagerly anticipated), pet competition, treasure hunt, tombola and tea. The proceeds of the tombola and donations given towards the tea amounted to £286. This money was donated to St Margaret's, Millington. For those of a more energetic turn of mind there was a wheelbarrow race followed by rounders after tea. The day concluded with beef & pork sandwiches at The Gait Inn kindly provided by Stuart & Helen.
