P.E. Yearly Review
In Physical Education, students gain knowledge and skills for movement that provide the groundwork for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and
access to a physically-active lifestyle. The students are introduced to a wide variety of skills so that they find a love in something physical. Students understand the importance of
physical activity and health throughout their life. Character building (i.e. integrity, teamwork, perseverance, attitude, sportsmanship, etc.) is a large part of the P.E. program at
ADS.
In Grades K-2, children learn basic movement skills and start to gain knowledge of how the body works in relation to physical activity. Students start to develop a vocabulary for
movement, their body in addition to knowledge of space and body awareness. Students participate in basic levels of strength, endurance and flexibility. In addition students work
safely in groups and individual movement settings. Students are introduced to basic skills, working at their own level, so success is achieved. A major goal is to present a variety
of activities and games that harmonize with their natural sense of wonder and challenge with regard to physical activity and build on that natural sense. Composure and conflict
resolution skills are taught and practiced. As students get older and more skilled, more advanced skills are taught.
In Grades 3-5, students start to set goals for themselves with regard to strength, endurance and flexibility. They continue working safely in groups and in individual movement
settings. Students are taught more advanced skills yet continue to work at their own level allowing success to be achieved. A variety of activities and games are offered so that
students are given an opportunity to try many different physical activities. With each skill taught, connections are made so that they can see how the skills can apply to other
activities. Character building continues. Cooperative play and skill building is the focus. Competition is introduced in small group settings.
In Grades 6-8, students have more choice. They also start to show mature form in fundamental, locomotor and manipulative skills and can often maintain that form while
participating in dynamic game situations. Identifying personal fitness goals for themselves and beginning to understand how exercise affects different parts of the body is an
important part of the learning. The students will continue to learn about healthy lifestyles and how this relates to their fitness status. They are expected to work independently to
complete assigned tasks. The students will continue to learn the value of participation and can resolve conflicts during games and sports in acceptable ways.
