Broadwater Public School
Student Welfare, Positive Discipline and Effective Learning
Statement of Purpose
To create a school committed to excellence in education in a safe, caring and friendly environment.
Rationale
Schools need to be places where every student can learn and grow with confidence. Students
develop best in schools where teaching and learning occur in a context of student welfare. Schools
should be safe and happy places for students and their teachers. Student welfare is enhanced when
all members of the school community participate in the learning programs and life of the school.
Aims
The school’s Student and Welfare and Discipline policy aims to encourage and reward appropriate
behaviour at school and promote self-discipline within the students. This self-discipline will enable
students to understand the school’s and community’s expectations of standards of behaviour and
to act accordingly. The policy acknowledges that student welfare encompasses everything that the
school community does to meet the personal and social needs of students and enhance their wellbeing.
The school discipline policy may apply outside of school hours and off school premises where there
is a clear and close connection between the school and the conduct of students.

Strategies and practices to manage inappropriate student behaviour
It is important that we at all times monitor student behaviour to ensure that children understand
what appropriate behaviour is and children’s rights are being protected.





If students are disruptive and affecting the teaching and learning of other students then
their behaviour will be dealt with by the teacher. If the behaviour persists then their actions
will be recorded in the Student Behaviour Register.
If students are being rude, uncooperative or irresponsible then their behaviour will be dealt
with by the teacher. If the behaviour persists then their actions will be recorded in the
Student Behaviour Register.
Time out from play or class activities or loss of privileges will be considered as consequences
of unacceptable behaviours.
Parent contact will be made where a serious incident occurs or a pattern of inappropriate
behaviour is identified with a student. Three time-outs will result in parent contact.
Students may be excluded from representing the school/attending school events.


Welfare concerns will be discussed at the conclusion of each staff meeting where staff can
