There is a constant need for new proven/validated remediation techniques. 6 Offer: EURSSEM European Radiation Survey and Site Execution Manual EURSSEM (1st version) has been established within the 6th EC Framework project “Coordination Network on Decommissioning (CND)”. The CND project officially ended 31 June 2009. The European Radiation Survey and Site Execution Manual (EURSSEM) has been developed to provide a consistent consensus approach and guidance to conduct all actions at radioactively contaminated and potentially radioactively contaminated sites and/or groundwater up to their release for restricted or unrestricted (re)use. 7 Offer: EURSSEM • Approach: - Service point of view, document free of names/pointers to commercial organizations, governmental regulations, etc. Leading strategies, leading practical option(s), etc.; all strategies, practical options ….. no judging. Applicable for all stakeholders involved in processes to remediate or restore radioactively contaminated sites for restricted or unrestricted (re)use. • Combining (leading) literature: - IAEA; MARSSIM (2002); CIRIA Safegrounds Learning Network: ITRC; EPA Diverse Member states – consensusRegulator/Agencies US Nuclear Industry and Defense sites - UK Interstate Techn. & Research Council - US Environmental Protection Agency – US Publications 8 Offer: EURSSEM Contents 1 Introduction 2 Development of a strategy, implementation and execution program to remediate radioactively contaminated sites 3 Characterisation of radioactively contaminated sites 4 Environmental remediation of radioactively contaminated sites 5 Stewardship 9 Offer: EURSSEM Contents 1 Introduction 2 Development of a strategy, implementation and execution program to remediate radioactively contaminated sites 3 Characterisation of radioactively contaminated sites 4 Environmental remediation of radioactively contaminated sites 5 Stewardship - Background - Purpose and scope of EURSSEM - The EURSSEM approach - Structure of the manual - Use of the manual 10 Offer: EURSSEM Contents 1 Introduction 2 Development of a strategy, implementation and execution program to remediate radioactively contaminated sites 3 Characterisation of radioactively contaminated sites 4 Environmental remediation of radioactively contaminated sites 5 Stewardship - Context and objectives - Designing a remediation program for radiological contaminated sites - Basic considerations about planning for remediation - Practical implementation of the management and selection of remedial actions - Stakeholder involvement - Historical site assessment - Risk assessment - Health physics, safety, security and environmental protection plan - Site characterisation - Environmental remediation plan - Waste management and transport plan - Stewardship - Record keeping - Archive for future referencing - Quality management plan 11 Offer: EURSSEM Contents 1 Introduction 2 Development of a strategy, implementation and execution program to remediate radioactively contaminated sites 3 Characterisation of radioactively contaminated sites 4 Environmental remediation of radioactively contaminated sites 5 Stewardship - Introduction - Definition of key terms adopted in site characterisation - Design of field-based site characterisations; data quality objective process - Samples - Sampling frequencies, locations and patterns - Non-intrusive methods - Intrusive methods - Field survey and laboratory equipment - Analysis of samples - Data interpretation and drawing conclusions - Reporting results - Common mistakes 12 Offer: EURSSEM Contents 1 Introduction 2 Development of a strategy, implementation and execution program to remediate radioactively contaminated sites 3 Characterisation of radioactively contaminated sites 4 Environmental remediation of radioactively contaminated sites 5 Stewardship - Introduction - Design of an environmental remediation plan - Remediation: Planning approaches - Remediation: Evaluation criteria of approaches and techniques - Overview of available remediation techniques - Remediation implementation activities - Conducting post-remediation activities 13 Offer: EURSSEM Contents 1 Introduction 2 Development of a strategy, implementation and execution program to remediate radioactively contaminated sites 3 Characterisation of radioactively contaminated sites 4 Environmental remediation of radioactively contaminated sites 5 Stewardship - Introduction - Components of longterm stewardship - Management - Institutional/administrative controls - Maintenance/long term behaviour of engineering solutions - Monitoring - Periodic review - Removal of restrictions of site access - Keeping stakeholders involved - Economic context 14 EURSSEM; //www.eurssem.eu/ Partner to the ENVIRONET Network 15 Nuclear Research and consultancy Group Thank you for your attention. 16 Blanco 17
