It will also provide students a supervised experience in the clinical areas of pediatric nursing within the practicum course. It intended to help students to appreciate the child as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as neonatal and pediatric nurse specialist. It will further enable the student to function as educator, manager and researcher in the field of Pediatric nursing. General Objectives: Upon completion of this Course, the students will be able to: 1. Appreciate the history and developments in the field of pediatrics and pediatric nursing as a specialty. 2. Apply the concepts of growth and development in providing care to the pediatric clients and their families. 3. Appreciate the child as a holistic individual 5 Clinical Objectives:- During the clinical experience period, the students within 14 weeks will have the following clinical objectives according to each area of experience. Pediatric Surgical Unit: In surgical unit, the student will be able to: Perform a comprehensive health assessment by obtaining essential information about the child’s history and performing physical assessment as well. Assess the level of growth and development and taking the child’s growth measurements. Assess the need of at least one child with a disease entity. Writ a nursing care plan based upon the assessment taken and according with the child’s developmental stage. Implement the plan using established nursing action on the child; performing the following procedures under the supervision of the instructor or nurse mentor: 1. Holding, feeding 2. Changing dipper 3. Taking vital signs 4. Growth measurements 5. Calculate and give medication 6. Administering and calculate IV therapy 7. Collection of specimens 8. Lab investigations 9. Wound care 10. Restrains 11. Oxygen therapy and suctioning 12. Preoperative and postoperative care. 13. Bandaging 14. Maintain infection control at all time. 15. Play therapy. 16. Hot and cold comperes. 17. Blood transfusion. Evaluate the outcomes of the nursing care plan. Provide health teaching to the child and caregiver. Document findings correctly. 6 Pediatric Medical Unit: In medical unit, the student will be able to Perform a comprehensive health assessment by obtaining essential information about the child’s history and performing physical assessment as well. Well Baby Clinic: In well baby clinic, the student will be able to: Take vital signs Assess growth measurements Follow up with child immunizations Prepare and give vaccinations. The student should perform under the supervision of a qualified nurse 7 Nursery: In nursery, the student will be able to: Recognize the characteristics of the newborn. Identify the newborn’s needs. Maintain infection control The student should perform under the supervision of a qualified nurse. 8 NICU: (Observation mostly) In NICU, the student will be able to: Familiarize themselves with the used flow sheets in the unit and cases Equipment used in the unit Incubator care Phototherapy Thermal care Monitor vital signs NGT feeding and parenteral feeding Emergency care Artificial ventilator Oxygen therapy Tracheostomy care Chest physiotherapy Maintain infection control The student should perform under the supervision of a qualified nurse. Attendance: College policy states that students may be dropped from final exam when absent 20% of the scheduled course hours A student is given warning letter, if absent 10% of the course hours A student who is late three times (enters classroom or lab after the instructor by 10 minutes) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for the delay & was accepted by the faculty. Students are expected to be PUNCTUAL at all time, and to be back from break ON TIME. 2. Student Participation 10 Students are expected to participate in discussion, readings, in-class activities. There are point values assigned to such activities. 3. Test Retaking If the student miss a quiz, a written documentation of the reason for absence e.g. sick leave, death of family member is required in order to retake the test (applies to written assignment and feedback). A 10% of the maximum score attainable may be deducted from tests taken late. It is the student's responsibility to take the missed test within a week of the scheduled test to be arranged with the instructor, failure to take the test within this period will result in the student receiving a grade of zero for the test. The instructor has the option of administering a test different from that missed by the student but one that test the same body of knowledge. College policies are to be followed in case of missed. Work Submissions: o Any completed homework must be handed in on time to the responsible Faculty. o Students submitting after the deadline “zero” will be awarded. o Students responsible to keep a duplicate copy of the submitted work because it may be needed for any unexpected circumstances. o Students should submit their home work covered with a plain sheet containing name, University number, Course title and Code, Year, Supervisor Name and type of the home work (e.g. Nursing care plane, Literature Search, and mother class) o Students responsible to submit their case study to the ASSIGNED faculty member (Same faculty who will supervise you in presentation). o Student expected to handed in their homework clean & tidy Students Behavior: o o o o o o Students should always be on their best behavior. Any student who exceeds her absences limit will be given a grade of Zero.
