Quotes:

“You know what a soc is?” “White trash with mustangs and madras.” (Pg. 55)

This Quote was one of my favorite quotes that I had personally chosen, in relation to which I think is one of the best quotes in the book that summarizes Pony boy’s personality as well as being able to examine if he actually loves his gang. He shows that his gang

(The Greasers) are more than valuable and should not be underestimated by any other gang and permits to show that his gang will not be the ones who will be criticized by others. This quote, also addresses the importance of Ponyboy showing important value to his gang, and no matter whom subjects the Greasers without respect, should be punished too. This quote also drives Ponyboy to always keep his mental mind strong against anyone who tries to outmatch him, as he does not hold back but expresses his bravery and his passion to show that the Greasers are not always the underdogs to be unfairly judged by others. Ponyboy adjusts to himself and his actions and talks back to the Socs after the socs make fun of the Greasers, and although in this situation Ponyboy is alone with Johnny with against a gang of the “tough” Greasers, his passion and bravery to cope with situations like this and respect his gang at all times derives him to become a stronger character in the novel later on, enabling him to handle difficult situations that a normal 14 year old boy would not be able to handle.

2) “I don’t care about Darry. But I was still lying and I knew it”(pg.18)

This quote expresses how much Ponyboy loves his brother(s) although he knows that he is lying to himself. This quote above makes himself state that he does not care about Darry, as this is the quote that truly defines Ponyboys personality and his characteristics as a person. Being a true member as a Greaser gang member, he has helped himself to fight through hard situations, as he knows he loves Darry inside. This quote shows Ponyboys true feelings deep inside him, as he knows that although at times he might hate lying to himself feeling depressed at some situations, he loves his family members inside him.

3) “I wanted to cry, but Greasers don’t cry in front of strangers. Some of us never cry at all. Like Dally and Two-Bit and Tim Shepard- they forgot how at an early age.” (Pg 102) -Chapter 7

This quote shows to the people of how Ponyboy can follow along and keep the rules among his gang (Greasers) and between the gang members around him. Although Ponyboy wants to do things at times, being the youngest member of the gang does not stop him from looking up to what his older brothers (older people in the gang) do in certain situations. It is tough for Ponyboy to hide things at certain times, but he shows Great Spirit in maintaing the symbol of the Greasers - To be tough at all times by not crying.

4) “You aint gonna die,’ I said. Trying to hold my voice down.”

This quote shows how Ponyboy always keeps his hopes high. Although he knows that Johnny is going to die, he strongly confesses to himself that nothing can affect Johnny and that he will live on. This shows that Ponyboy cares and loves his gang members, and that he is a true character in the story that can be respected at all times by everyone in the community.

5) “Darry and I would probably still have misunderstandings- we were too different not to-but no more fights.”

Ponyboy, now wants no more fights as he admits to himself and believes that the value of being brothers, is much more important than spending time to argue. This quotes shows how Ponyboy over time has changed as a character, and now wants peace between his brothers for sure. This clearly defines ponyboys characteristics, as before when he was immature and young, he now realizes that change will need to be taken place. This settles down everyone in his family- Darry, and Sodapop including himself. They are able to get along better as a family from that point which is a major change that Ponyboy has shown in the book.
