Michael has been a bus mechanic for the St. Clair School System for the past three years. We live in Trussville with our two children, Sam (9), and Sadie (5). Sam is in the 4th grade at Margaret, and my daughter will be in kindergarten this year at Margaret. We have one precious dog, Parker, and 2 mischievous cats, Jake and Leo. We are members of Clear Branch United Methodist Church. This will be my 10th year to teach in the public school system. I taught 6th grade for 4 years at McAdory High School, and I have been teaching 5th grade for 5 years here in St. Clair County. I graduated from UAB in 1998with a bachelor's degree in elementary education with a middle school endorsement in language arts. In my free time, I love to spend time with my family. We love watching movies together, swimming, going to the park, and hiking through the woods. I have been teaching for 17 years. I graduated from UAB with an education specialist degree in education and from the University of West Alabama with a master’s degree in counseling. I enjoy spending time with my family, enjoying nature, and photography. PHARR My name is Ashley Sumerel Pharr, and I am in my seventh year of teaching. I have spent the last six years teaching first grade at OES and Margaret. I am looking forward to this upcoming school year in fifth grade! I attended Odenville schools, and I am a proud graduate of St. Clair County High School. I graduated in 2005 from the University of North Alabama with my B.S. in Elementary Education. I received my M.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama in 2007. We will have timed tests on basic math facts throughout the year. All students should know their multiplication and division facts. If your child still struggles with this, please help them at home with flash cards. MATH Grading Procedure: *All tests will be worth 200 points. *Quizzes will be worth 100 points. *Classwork will be checked periodically and will be worth 100 points. *Homework will be worth 100 points an assignment. Students must show their work to get credit. Students will be given a weekly homework assignment at the beginning of the week, and it will be due on Friday. SCIENCE This year we will be studying various topics to include parts of the cell and human body, interactions among living things, chemistry, and space. Science Grading Procedure: *All tests and projects will be work 200 points. *Quizzes and labs will be worth 100 points. *Classwork will be checked periodically and will be worth 100 points. *Students will rarely have science homework and all tests will be open book tests. READING The name of the story, the vocabulary words, and the skill we are studying each week can be found at our 5th grade website http://margaret5thgrade.wikispaces.com under “Mrs. Hurd” in a weekly format. The lessons stay in numerical order all year with a review after every five lessons. The number of the lesson we are studying is located on the weekly newsletter sent home each Monday. SOCIAL STUDIES At the beginning of each unit of study, students will define new vocabulary words in their notebooks. In addition, important concepts from each lesson will be reviewed, and upon the completion of the lesson and vocabulary assignments, students will have a weekly notebook test. Students will be responsible for keeping up with their study notes in their binder since their performance on the weekly notebook test are highly dependent upon them and count as a major part of their grade. This will help cut down on the amount of time spent on bookkeeping task and more time for instruction. EXTRA FOOD ITEMS: All students will be blocked from using their account for extra items unless a note is sent giving permission. It may be easier, however, to just send extra money in hand for these items to prevent depleting of your child’s account unexpectedly.
