Do Now: 1. Take out your review sheets (to be checked) 2. In your notebook, – Define mockingbird – With a partner create a chart of the “mockingbirds” in the novel. Missionary tea: The women feel sorry for the Mrunas who are pagans. Yet, they have no compassion for the (Christian) African Americans in their own town. Mockingbird: an American bird famous for its singing and its ability to imitate the sounds of other birds. They help man by eating insects and weeding seeds. His gifts in the tree in part 1 foreshadow the greatest gift in part 2: Life. Hitler and the Jews: Ms. Gates Injustice/evil done to Tom and the students discuss the horrors happeneing to the Jews Robinson in Part 2 is foreshadowed by events in at the hands of the Nazis. The Legend of the European Mockingbird • It’s called a pious bird and • It has a scarlet breast b/c, according to legend, it picked a thorn from the crown of Christ as he was on his way to Calvary. A drop of blood fell onto its breast, dying it red. • The robin showed compassion and mercy. • Tom Robinson helped Mayella out of compassion for her. 3/17/15 Aim: Who are the mockingbirds in the novel?
