Currently work in relevant practice for a minimum of 15 hours per week
Demonstrate evidence of appropriate, recent and successful completion
of study and be working currently in a relevant field of practice.
Extensive over one semester
The aim of this module is to develop practitioners who will take a lead
role in the management and development of effective strategies for
health and social care interventions. These interventions will be initiated
in partnership with clients, their families, carers and other stakeholders.
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Critically analyse leadership strategies related to practice in
order to enable individuals, groups, communities and agencies
to work effectively in partnership
2. Examine and evaluate existing interpersonal skills within a
theoretical framework in order to establish, negotiate, maintain
and improve communication with individuals and groups.
3. Utilise key concepts and theoretical frameworks in engagement
with others to promote decision making and creative problem
solving in complex and uncertain situations pertinent to the
professional role.
4. Develop strategies for service planning and improvement with
consideration of financial, human, information, time and material
resources.
5. Encourage, consider and evaluate service user and carer views
together with other stakeholder perspectives in the delivery and
evaluation of health and social care services ensuring the
promotion of equality and diversity.

6. Lead and manage teams through the process of continuous
change ensuring quality and integrity of service delivery.
Change theory and strategies for leadership will be examined including
transformational leadership and facilitation. Role development and
leadership within the political, economic, social, technological,
environmental and cultural context of health and social care will be
analysed. Utilisation of health data and technology to realise the full
capacity of resources. Examination of communication, motivational
interviewing, interpersonal skills and personal effectiveness, and their
application to a range of complex situations. This will include particular
consideration of collaborative working. Practice development and clinical
governance.
Taught hours will include formal key note lectures to introduce concepts
and theories. Seminar groups and panel discussions to facilitate the
development and consolidation of ideas and expertise. Practice based
learning will include guided experiential learning in the application of

Assessment tasks
Students will undertake two assessment tasks as follows:
Theory assessment - 50% of the total mark
Compile a portfolio to evidence role development and leadership
in the workplace.
Practice assessment - 50% of the total mark
Identify a change or development that could be implemented in practice.
Plan the change management processes involved.
Express this change/development in a conference style poster and
present this to the Practice Teacher /mentor and practice team.
Critically reflect on the whole process with the Practice Teacher /mentor.
Both assessment tasks must be passed (minimum 40%) in order to
pass the module.
