There is no spelling this week due to the weather and
days off of school. However, next week students will be
getting new lists based on their assessment from a few
weeks ago. I am happy to report that all students
moved up in lists! Woohoo!
This week we are working on rotating in reading groups
where students will choose their own skills to work on as
well as meet with me in a small group. During group time
we will be focusing on their fall MAP target skill as well
as genres.
Ask your child which book they are reading and what it’s
about. Also ask them what genre it is!
Please continue to have your child read AR books at
night! They need to read 8 chapter/nonfiction books
for second trimester. They also need to earn 80% or
higher on the AR test for them to count toward their
goal.
Students should be able to say:
I can achieve 80% or higher on my spelling tests.
I can achieve 80% or higher on my AR tests.
I can make an inference while reading.
I can identify words with the stem mov, mot, mob and
understand they have something to do with the meaning
to move.
We have begun ISAT skill and extended response
practice. Please be prepared for extra practice to
come home for homework. Students are also beginning
to practice for ISAT writing-5 paragraph essays using
examples from the text to support their thinking!
This week we are beginning to work on using estimation
and rounding to solve problems and see if the answer is
REASONABLE. Students will also use estimating and
rounding to solve two step word problems. Please
reference the videos on my webpage for additional help
if needed! Students are working hard on in and out
boxes, writing equations and solving this two step word
problems. A test will be next week.
We have also started working on ISAT practice so
please ask your child about the game Man vs Mob we
started playing today! We also will begin work on
extended response-this is where children have to solve
the problem, show their work, and then explain their
steps and why they did them. This will become
homework practice too so be ready!
Students should be able to say:
I can use estimation and rounding to solve a multi-step
word problem.
I can use front end estimation to round because I know
that front end estimation means round to the greatest
place.
I can solve a two step word problem.
I can solve for n.
I can make an array to show a multiplication problem.
I can make groups of to show a multiplication problem.
I can use a number line to show a multiplication
problem.
I can use a multiplication chart to solve a multiplication
problem.

identity and distributive properties of multiplication.

sharing model.
