The time for EXPLORATION has arrived, Class of 2019! Together, as we explore the Spanish language and the diverse culture it represents, we will discover more about ourselves and our own language, and make ourselves increasingly eligible to potential employers. Being multilingual opens countless doors to the future, and since we are an undoubtedly uncommon group of individuals, we will take risks and show bravery to tackle new challenges head on. ¡Vamos, amigos! I am EXCITED to learn Spanish because…. I am NERVOUS to learn Spanish because… “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” How does this quote pertain to you in Spanish I? ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ _________________________________ 3 Nombre __________________________________ Español 1 – Unidad 1.0 24 de agosto del 2015 Educación es importante Why Spanish? Why now? While sources vary, many say that Spanish is currently the second-most-spoken language in the world with over 380 million speakers. Studying Spanish and ultimately becoming fluent in a second language, therefore, not only provides you the opportunity to engage in 380,000,000 conversations that were once out of reach, but also gives you a unique and competitive edge over your monolingual counterparts. Hispanic culture is full of diverse expressions of music, art, and literature. From dancing the tango or salsa to admiring a modern painting by Salvador Dalí to diving deep into the mystical literary worlds of Gabriel García Márquez, your studies will introduce you to an array of diverse Spanish-speaking cultures. You’ll learn about various customs, traditions and value systems in Latin America and Spain, not to mention the complicated and rich histories of each of these regions’ countries. From food and family to school and sports, you’ll learn all about life. Spanish is, after all, a representation of people, not just a language. The United States is home to more than 45 million Spanish speakers, and US Census projections indicate that the Spanish-speaking population will continue to grow exponentially in the upcoming decades. Whether on the radio, living across the hall or even in your own household, the Spanish language is probably already part of your life in some way. Understanding Spanish allows you to sing along with the music blaring on the street, chat with your own classmates and their families, and introduce yourself to that friendly guy behind the counter at your favorite corner store. No matter who you are, Spanish can enrich your life in some way. 4 Nombre __________________________________ Español 1 – Unidad 1.0 24 de agosto del 2015 Educación es importante Do you know what career you plan to pursue? Many industries pay their bilingual employees higher salaries, sometimes up to an additional $20,000 per year. In fact, if you were to put a few thousand business executives together in a room, you won't find many with the same educational backgrounds, industry experience or job descriptions, but about two-thirds of executives do have one thing in common. Thirty-one percent of executives speak two languages. Employees who are bilingual in English and Spanish are particularly in demand. Latinos are now the nation's largest minority group. 5 Nombre __________________________________ Español 1 – Unidad 1.0 24 de agosto del 2015 Educación es importante Between the World and Me Ta-Nehisi Coates Ta-Nehisi Coates is an American writer, journalist, and educator. I wished I had come to it sooner. I wish, when I was back in that French class, that I had connected the conjugations, verbs, and gendered nouns to something grander. I wish someone had told me what that class really was – a gate to some other blue world. I wanted to see that world myself, to see the doors behind them.” “I was afraid. I didn’t really speak the language. I did not know the customs. But I realized that those changes, with all their agony, awkwardness, and confusion, were the definining fact of my life, and for the first time I knew that I was really alive.” 24 de agosto del 2015 Educación es importante 1) What did Coates realize AFTER receiving his first passport? __________________________ __________________________ __________________________ __________________________ __________________________ 2) How will you approach Spanish class at RPHS?
