THE 2012 HIGH TUNSTALL OLYMPICS
For the final curriculum enrichment day of the year we’re putting the ball in your
court. The aim of the day is to produce a mini Olympic games with opening
ceremony, showcase events and a grand finale. Students will work in groups
across Year 7, 8 and 9 in areas of interest selected by each student to create or
final event. During periods one, two and three you will make, do, practice and
perfect your chosen area and after a short break for lunch we will all join together
as a school to host our Olympics.
You will now see the choices of activities for the day. You must select the three
you are most interested in and you will be allocated an activity from one of those
three areas. 1 will be your first (preferred) choice with 3 being your last.
CREATIVITY
Giant Chinese Dragon: Using creative and design skills to create huge 3d characters
for the opening ceremony
Inflatable Structures: Using skill and ingenuity to create inflatable creations that
depict the games
World Class Dance: Taking inspiration from across the globe this group will explore
dances from different cultures and countries to produce a showcase dance event
British Rock Extravaganza: The best of British rock being brought together to open
the games and keep competitors motivated. If you sing, play an instrument or you
love rock music then this is for you
Urban Art: Taking inspiration from some of the worlds best urban artists you’ll
produce some stunning pieces of urban art to adorn the school
Textile Olympic Rings: Turning the games into a must have fashion accessory you’ll
get your creative skills flowing to produce textiles art
TECHNOLOGY
Magical Olympic Advertising: Working to produce a magical series of adverts to keep
the Olympics in everyone’s minds. Rival coca cola and put your film editing skills
to the test.
Team GB T Shirt Design: Become the next Dolce and Gabana with you own series of
Olympic T-Shirts
Great British Refreshments: Utilise your culinary skills to create some stunning food
and drink to refresh the competitors
Laser Cut Rewards: The Olympic torch has been an iconic element of the run up to
the games. Can you equal it’s design with your own Olympic merchandise?
RM Olympics: Create Olympic memorabilia with the resistant materials team.
MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES
La Ligue: The beautiful game is even more beautiful in French. Experience La Ligue
and put your language and football skills to the test in our French football
tournament. Learning the language and playing the game! Tournament beamed
live over the internet in the afternoon!
J'aime jouer au tennis: Andy Murray didn’t win. Shocked! Maybe he needs some
European flair? Get that and more as you play the concrete court season French
style! Tournament finals in the afternoon and filmed for the masses
Aérobic à haute intensité: You’ve guessed it. It’s French, it’s intense and get’s you
out of breath! Okay maybe you haven’t guessed it if you thought kissing but
Aerobics and languages combine for a high intensity workout culminating in a
display of physical prowess in the afternoon.
MATHEMATICS
Chess Grand Masters: If you understand how to play the game then take the ultimate challenge
and compete for the champion of champions in the HTCS Grand Master Chess League
Taekwando: Learn this superb martial art from a black belt instructor and test you reactions like a
professional competitor
Performance Cycling: (Bring own bike)
Participants will be coached by a qualified British Cycling for Schools coach in a variety of
techniques throughout the day. They will learn the skills necessary to take part in a
competitive cycling event. They will improve bike handling skills, pedalling technique,
teamwork and learn about competitive cycling. This will culminate in a cyclo cross race to test
the skills learned throughout the day.
Requirements for students: A bike in good working order with 2 working brakes (a bike with gears
is preferable). A cycling helmet that conforms to a good safety standard
Pyramid Building: Are you brave enough to build a pyramid big enough to seal a maths teacher
in?! Are you skilful enough to build the smallest pyramid out of one sheet of A4 paper? Are
you competitive enough to take part in the Pyramid Building Event where you will learn how to
make different shapes out of paper, demonstrating your creativity and ability to work in
teams.
WORLD AFFAIRS
Hoplite Racing: Create your own armour and race in the ultimate of ancient olympic
events. Showcase event in the afternoon
Sustainable Olympics: Calling Captain Planet! Use natural and recycled resources to
create a sustainable olympic games.
The Humanities Olympics: The stade, the chariot race, the tug of war
Take on some of the games ancient and unusual events in the humanities olympics.
COMMUNICATIONS
Poetry Live competition: Poetry has long been associated with the games and was an
event following the revival of the games in 1896. Join the bards and showcase
your Olympic poetry.
Larvley Landon Tarn: Learn to sell like a cockney! Create a advertising package to
market the wonderful London - sightseeing, a marvellous hotel and a ticket to
which ever event they choose to advertise.
History of the games documentary: Working with World Affairs to create an
informative documentary for the games. Whether your behind the camera,
imparting knowledge, interviewing old participants or creating the special effects
you can do your bit to create this memorable HTCS Panorama!
DISCOVERY
DNA the code for life!
Let’s make it the code for the Olympics. Help make 5 large DNA hoops which will make up
our very own Olympic rings. Illuminate each ring with colored lights to make it the
centerpiece of High Tunstall’s Olympic ceremony.
Raise your flag!
Put your creative skills to good use and help produce the flags for our Olympic ceremony.
With only fabric, paints and your imagination!
Reaching the limits!
Ever wondered about the limits to the human body, what happens when bones and
muscles are pushed beyond their capacity? In this workshop learn to make bones and
break bones. NOT for the faint hearted!! Involves recreating injuries and dissection.
Shine the light!
Use your electronic and design skills to make an illuminated Olympic sign for the college.
Why not add some movement- also create a revolving Olympic ring structure
SPORTS SCIENCE
World Rugby 7’s: Get your collars up. It’s the world rugby sevens. Create your own
Haka and get involved in the rugby 7’s world tournament. Players and officials
welcome.
Olympic Golf: Tiger Woods has nothing on you as you learn to play the game and take
part in the HTCS Masters.
Boccia: Boccia is bowls what Jay Z is to hip hop. Play the kings of paralympic sports
and test your co-ordination to the limits. Superb prize available to the winning
player.
Olympic Gymnastics: Beth Tewddle, Natalia Yurchenko, Josef Stalder. Create you
olympic gym routine in either floor, vault, beam or rythmic. With two outstanding
male gymnasts delivering the session, boys and girls are welcome!
Volleyball: Take on the challenge of Volleyball and use your physical skill and tactical
awareness to become Olympic Champions
