Self Photo Assignment
Directions: Shortly we will be starting to watch full-length films and engage in a creative and
intellectually important analysis of those films. However, before we get to the whole thing, we must
practice with smaller elements of the film. For this assignment, you will create a frame (as opposed to a
shot, scene, sequence, or film) that has special meaning to you, using the framing techniques we
discussed in class. Your photo will reflect several things: who are you, where do you come from, what is
your belief system, where are you going?
For this assignment, you are to set up a photo of yourself that reflects how you see yourself now.
Apply your knowledge of film technique when you set up your shot. You will consider and remark upon
the following questions:
Would a close, medium, or long shot best express what you have to say?
Who or what else do you want in the picture with you?
Will depth of field (foreground, midground, background) be important?
What type of lighting will you use?
What type of camera angle will you use?
How will you be facing (or not facing) the camera? Why?
Since you are applying the knowledge you acquired in class, this needs to be a photo taken for
this assignment. Do not attempt to use an old photo. The photo must be school appropriate.
You will also complete a written portion for this assignment. The written portion will discuss the
following (you may want to check off the things you have written about to make sure you have
everything):
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
What type of shot did you use (ELS, LS, MS, CU, ECU)? Why did you pick this shot?
What is in the picture with you? What is the significance of each item?
What’s in the foreground/middle ground/background? Why is this arrangement significant?
What type of lighting did you use? Why?
What type of camera angle did you use? How does the angle you used influence your audience? What did
you try to say with the angle?
How are you facing the camera? What does that suggest about you?
This assignment is worth 50 assessment points and, because much of the work is outside of class,
30 additional homework points. The photo itself will be worth 20 points, and the analysis of the
photo (the written portion) will be worth 30 points and will follow the rubric on the next page.
You may want to sketch what you think you’ll want your photo to look like before actually
taking it. This assignment will be due on MONDAY, 2/23.
