Year 2 Term 1 Clever Cubs Songs & Rhymes – Lesson 10 – Five Little Monkeys Learning Outcome: Students will be able to role-play the rhyme using props made in the class. Students will be able to count up to five and from five to zero. Students will be able to re-tell basic facts about monkeys and crocodiles. Introduction to Topic: There are 2 rhymes in this lesson – Teacher Resource 1: Songs. Draw a monkey on the board and write down some simple facts as told by students (diet, habitat, pass-times, appearance, abilities etc.). Depending which song you are doing first, talk a bit about crocodiles or bed-time routines. Sing the song once through and then again as a role-play with students as volunteers. Explain what “teasing” is (it can be as simple as “making silly faces”). Why are the monkeys teasing the crocodile? (because he can’t climb the tree maybe). Why does the crocodile “snap” the monkeys? If you are doing the other song (Jumping on the bed), talk about routines, the bed (furniture), the dangers involved in jumping on the bed, what you might do if someone bumped their head in the playground or in class, etc. Main Activity: 1) Make finger puppets or lolly stick puppets of the monkeys and crocodile – Student Resource 1 or make your own, see Teacher Resource 2. 2) Counting booklet – Student Resource 2 (enlarge to A3). Supplementary Activities: Hand or footprint crocodile Monkey mask Jungle scene collage Numbers 1- 5 Key Vocabulary: Monkey, crocodile, jumping, teasing, doctor, mummy, bed, snap Activities to be included: Story – 1) Five Little Monkeys Songs – see song book Games – see resource book Differentiation: Reflection: Use whatever you have made to role-play song or ask students to “re-tell” song in their own words.
