Issues and challenges: testimonial and
references
1. Colleague who observes your lessons and writes the testimonial
does not understand the descriptors, what he or she should be
observing or recording and does not look at the example
provided on the AIS website. This can result in:
a. insufficient detail in the comments in the testimonial
b. two specific examples of how the descriptor was
demonstrated not being included in the comments
c.
comments that are not based on observations
d. comments that do not refer to the descriptor
e. not all descriptors being addressed in testimonial.
2. Insufficient detail in references.
No specific examples of how the applicant demonstrated the
descriptor.
Inappropriate people writing the references.

Testimonials
Non-verbal communication is:

used to repeat the verbal message (e.g. point in a direction
while stating directions
 often used to accent a verbal message. (e.g. verbal tone
indicates the actual meaning of the specific words)
 often complement the verbal message but also may contradict.
E.g.: a nod reinforces a positive message (among Americans); a
“wink” may contradict a stated positive message
 used to regulate interactions (non-verbal cues covey when the
other person should speak or not speak)
 may substitute for the verbal message (especially if it is blocked
by noise, interruption, etc) — i.e. gestures (finger to lips to
indicate need for quiet), facial expressions (i.e. a nod instead of
a yes).
