SECTION A: Listening (Speech, Broadcast, Performance, Eulogy, Movie Clip, TV Clip…) Examples: Ted Talks, Open Line Discussions, Rick Mercer Rants The majority of listening assessments are speeches or oral presentations so let’s focus there! Here are the instructions for this section as they appear on the exam. INSTRUCTIONS: Students will be given the questions at the beginning of the session. Students will have 2 minutes to read over the questions. The text will be played for the first time. Following the first listening, students will have 2 minutes to make notes and/or respond to any questions they chose. The text will be heard for a second time. Following the second listening, students will complete the assigned questions. The total timje (from start to finish) of this section is 40 minutes. Point of view Examples Tone Symbolism Punctuation Repetition You will have to write an expository essay with 5 paragraphs that has a thesis based on the question asked of you. It will need an introduction that includes a thesis with 3 clauses. It will need body paragraphs that detail examples of how theme is developed by a certain convention (like above). It will need a conclusion that reflects on the content of your essay. 4
