THE IMPACT OF GAY LINGO AND NET LINGO
TO THE
ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS
OF THE STUDENTS
Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
People used to encounter these words such as “LOL”, “BTW”, “OTW”, “ATM”, or “Dito
na me” (I’m already here) and Selfie. You will notice these words in some text messages or even
in other social media like Facebook and Twitter. These words are called “Net Lingo.” According
to previous researches, Net lingo is the Web slang or Text slang words which contributes to all
forms of students’ communication and highly represented in all written forms of various web
chats, discussions though Emails or Text Messaging. How about these familiar words chuva,
chika, chaka, havey and waley; these words are called “Gay Lingo” or the Filipino Gayspeak.
According to Reinero A. Alba from the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) in his
article “In Focus: The Filipino Gayspeak (Filipino Gay Lingo)” these argot or jargon used by
Filipino gays in general when they are gathered together while having their personal
conversations. Historically, these words are known as “swardspeak” during 1970s and were
featured on a book entitled “Swardspeak: A Preliminary Study” by Jose Javier Reyes. There’s no
other words replaced since 1970s until Ronald Baytan in his essay “Language, Sex and Insults:
Notes on Garcia and Remoto’s The Gay Dict” emphasized that the word “sward” is
inappropriate to call the language of the Gay people. Preferably, “gayspeak” is more acceptable
than “swardspeak.”
Nowadays, most students are engaged with social media like Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram. There are also increasing number of students who use mobile phones or text
messaging. This kind of communication has become a part of students’ everyday life. It makes
their communication much easier and accessible but what if it affects their oral and written
skills academically? This is the primary concern of educators, parents, researchers and general
public that this practice is damaging the use of language in speaking and writing and will affect
the standard forms in the long run. The main focus of this study is to know how Gay Lingo and
Net Lingo do affect the performance of the students in oral and written skills.
