Things Fall Apart: Essay
Please choose one of the following questions to answer in a five-paragraph essay:
A. Before the arrival of the European missionaries, Umuofia is a complete, stable, and
fully functioning society. Support this statement by identifying and discussing three
aspects of Ibo culture that contribute to the stability of the society described in Things
Fall Apart. For example, you may choose to discuss gender roles, religious traditions,
political structures, or judicial practices. In the introductory paragraph, give a brief
summary of the novel and state your argument. In the body paragraphs, be sure to
include specific examples of each aspect of culture that you choose to discuss.
B. Apply our essential question, “What happens when different cultures meet?” to the
novel Things Fall Apart. From an Ibo perspective, what changes does the European
presence in Umuofia bring? Are these changes positive, negative, or mixed? For
example, the interaction with the Europeans creates discord within families and villages.
The Europeans also bring new ways of thinking that make communities more inclusive.
Make an argument that describes three ways the Ibo society changes as a result of
European influence. Be sure to provide specific evidence from the novel for each
example.
