Learning Goal: I can read and comprehend complex literary texts independently and proficiently. When you finish a book… After a good reader finishes a book, they spend some time processing the work. In order to help you do this, you will do one of the following: 1. Write a book review and post it on the bulletin board (after a teacher check). 2. Write an online book review on Mrs. Bean’s moodle page (moodle.mayfieldschools.org). (links/videos on how to do that on Mrs. Bean’s teacher page—this option available after 2/20/15) 3. Give a 1-2 minute book talk to your class on a Friday. After you complete and turn in one of these items, check them off on your status sheet. ALL ITEMS ARE DUE ON WEDNESDAYS DURING STATUS OF THE CLASS CHECK. Book talks shall be given on Fridays, but scheduled for an available Friday or Wednesdays. No more than five (5) in a class period. Option 1: Paper Book Review Handouts for this option will be available in the classroom. Learning Goal: I can compose an objective summary stating the key points of a text. Learning Goal: I can compose a clear and logical piece of writing that demonstrates my understanding of a topic. Instructions: For this review, you must have two paragraphs, minimum: A hook, and something to pull the audience in. A quick summary of the book (NO SPOILERS)—see learning goal above. A few sentences discussing what you thought of the book, WITH REASONS. It is not enough to say you liked or disliked it. Discuss author’s craft—what did they do well? Not so well? A final star rating (out of five), and a recommendation, as your last sentence. Option 2: Wiki Book Review Available after 2/20/15. Instructions: For this review, you will post your writing online. Your review must still have two paragraphs, minimum: A hook, and something to pull the audience in. Once it has been posted, either email your LA teacher a link OR print it and turn it in with your name on it. Option 3: Book Talk Handouts for this option will be available in the classroom. Learning Goal: I can present my information in a logical sequence, using appropriate eye contact, volume, and pronunciation. Instructions: For this review, you will be speaking in front of the class for 1-2 minutes about your book (you can write something in advance or wing it, but eye contact is part of the learning goal). You should have the actual book OR a powerpoint slide (in U: ahead of time ONLY). THIS IS A REQUIRED VISUAL. This is just a quick “this book is about…” If you ramble, this will be a problem. You should be discussing what you thought of the book, WITH REASONS.
