Module 4: Human Physiology and Anatomy 1

Introduction

In This Module you will begin to learn about the human body, how it is organized, and how the various systems work to keep the human organism functioning at peak performance.

Module Learning Outcomes:

Once you have finished this module you will be able to:

 Explain how the human body is organized into tissues, cavities, and organ systems.

 Describe the structure of the cardiovascular system and explain how it functions to move materials around the body.

 Explain how the immune system protects the body from pathogens.

 Describe the flow of blood through the body.

 Explain how gases are moved in and out of the body, and how they are exchanged with the cardiovascular system and with the cells.

Topic 4.1 Human Organization

Imagine trying to get around a city without a map. A map shows you the organization of the city, how to get around it, and where the carious amenities are. You are now beginning to build you

“road map:” of the human body. You will learn how tissues form organs, how organs form organ systems, and how organ systems form organisms (Module 1).

You begin in this module by learning tissues are organized in the body, and how the body is organized to provide for the needs of the organism.

You will learn about a fundamental process in biological systems – homeostasis. Just as you

“control” your environment (wearing more clothes when it is cold or staying out of the sun in the summer) the internal environment of an organism must be maintained within set limits. You will learn how the human organism does this.

Topic Learning Outcomes

a.

Describe the four tissue types and their functions. b.

Provide examples of each general tissue type and where it can be found. c.

Label a diagram with the body cavities and identify which major organs are found in each cavity. d.

Describe the function of the four types of body membranes and indicate where they are found. e.

Identify the functions of each of the eleven organ systems. f.

Explain how homeostasis regulates the body’s internal environment. g.

Explain how the skin regulates body temperature

Topic 4.3 Blood and Immunity

Blood is the medium used to transport substances around the body, and its structure and organization are derived from the types of materials it has to transport, but the blood has another vital function. Because it reaches the far corners of the body, the blood, much as a police or security force, also functions to protect the body against invading organisms and mechanical damage.

The blood does not work alone in this task. The lymphatic system and several other organs aid the blood to keep an organism protected and in good repair.

Topic Learning Outcomes

a.

Describe the components of blood and their general functions. b.

Describe the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. c.

Describe the blood clotting process. d.

Describe the difference between bacteria and viruses. e.

Explain the difference between innate and acquired immunity and how each functions. f.

Explain how the body prevents pathogen entry. g.

Explain the three main functions of the lymphatic system. h.

Describe the relationships between the lymphatic system and the cardiovascular system. i.

Give the immunological function and location in the body of the lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, thymus gland, and red bone marrow. j.

Describe an autoimmune disease.

Topic 4.4 Respiration

Gases are an important feature of human biology. We need oxygen for cellular respiration, and we need to be able to get rid of the waste gas formed, carbon dioxide. Gases need to be transported from the outside of the body down to the cellular level. You will study the mechanics of getting the gasses into and out of the blood and transporting the gases to and from the individual cells.

Topic Learning Outcomes

a.

Describe the functions of parts of the respiratory tract. b.

Identify the parts of the respiratory system on a diagram. c.

Describe the role of haemoglobin in respiration. d.

Describe the exchange of gases in the lungs and in tissues. e.

Explain the role of the respiratory centre in the control of breathing. f.

Describe the mechanics of breathing. g.

Explain lung capacity and distinguish among tidal volume, vital capacity, and residual volume. h.

Contrast ventilation, external respiration, internal respiration, and cellular respiration.
