What are they?
Why do we need to know about
them?
• Symbols- a word, phrase, image, or the like having
meaning and intrinsic value to a particular person,
group, culture.
• Objects- Material items important or necessary for the
culture
• Values- A principle, standard, or quality considered
worthwhile or desirable.
• Norms- A standard, model or pattern; general
average.
• Share traits- a distinguishing characteristic or
quality…
• Complexes- an intricate or complicated
association or assemblage of related things,
parts, units, etc…
• And Patterns- a combination of qualities, acts,
tendencies, etc…
• For example, American culture. What makes
the US, the US?
• Any group that shares common symbols, values, language and
norms that are different from the common culture.
• Do not necessarily reject the values of the parent culture, but
may borrow or change some.
• For example- The Amish
• A very conservative group that has separated themselves from the rest of
society.
• Believe in Christianity in a very strict form.
• Do not reject American society, but simply choose to live separate from
them.
• Does reject modern world technologies and luxuries in order to live a
humble life.

• Any group that rejects and challenges values, norms and
behaviors of the common culture.
• Replace what they have rejected with their own values, beliefs,
and norms.
• Go against society! 
• For example- Hippies.
• Believed the government was making the wrong choices with the overseas
policies (especially in Vietnam)
• Made their own culture, focusing on peace and love, and drugs being the
norm.
• Rejected almost all parts of American society.
