It addresses ways that changing organizational structures, uncertain environments, rapid technological change and increasing workforce diversity affect how managers perform the traditional functions of planning, organizing, controlling and leading. Course Objectives The goals of this course are to provide you with an introduction to what managers do and to the importance of management to organizations as well as helping you develop your analytical skills, communication skills and ability to work in groups. After taking this course you should understand and be able to explain: What managers do, How managers contribute to the performance of their organizations, How managers plan, organize, direct, and control the work others’ work to achieve organizational goals and objectives, What skills managers must have, Some of the reasons why managers differ in their ability to produce effective results. Exams There are 2 exams, a midterm and a final, each worth 35 % of the course grade. The final is not cumulative. The format of the exams is a combination of multiple choice and short answers/essays. More details as to the exam are available on the course website. Curve: Exams will be curved by adding the difference between a perfect grade and the highest grade to each student’s raw score. Each assignment is worth 8 % of your course grade for a total of 24 % of the course grade. Curve: Assignments won’t be curved. Late submission: Assignments will be accepted up to five calendar days late at a cost of 3 % off per day or part of day. Calendar days are: Monday through Sunday. Holidays and vacation days (e.g. Thanksgiving, Spring Break) count. Make-ups: Except under extraordinary circumstances, missed assignments cannot be made up. Participation Participation in the class is worth 6 % of your course grade. Throughout the semester, there will be in class activities (between 10 and 12). Eight class activities are required. Grading on these is Pass/Fail. Curve: Participation is not curved. Late or Missed activities: Participation activities cannot be made up. Attendance In an online course, class attendance refers to logging in to the course site at least twice a week and watching the lectures on schedule. Your course grade is likely to suffer if you do not do so. Deadlines/Late Work/Make-ups Specific policies concerning the acceptance of late work and make-ups are discussed in the sections covering course requirements.
