Latin 4
Spring 2011
General Information
We will be reading Vergil's Aeneid throughout the semester, concentrating on three aspects in
particular: 1.) Latin translation and grammar, paying extra attention to poetic aspects; 2.) the
Aeneid as literature; and 3.) the cultural context for the Aeneid.
The course text is: Vergil's Aeneid, Books I-VI (Bks. 1-6) [Paperback] , C. Pharr, ed. (9780865164215)
Student Learning Outcomes
 Students will be able to read, translate and interpret ancient Latin texts at an
intermediate level.
 Students will develop an enhanced understanding of written and spoken English
 Students will develop an understanding of other cultural traditions, expanding their
cultural experience and being presented with fresh perspectives on their own cultural
assumptions and traditions
 Students will develop an understanding of human experiences and cultures through
close reading and critical analysis of our histories, literatures, languages, ideas and
values
Requirements
There will be four quizzes on grammar. Quiz #1 will cover material from the first two weeks of
class. Quizzes #2-4 will be designed to react to needs / weaknesses revealed during the course
of the semester.
There will be four examinations, including the final. Each exam will cover work from the unit
immediately preceding the exam, and will consist of:
1. seen and sight passages for translation, with grammar;
2. Roman culture identifications.
3. scansion (beginning with exam #2)
Regular preparation, class participation, and attendance are expected, and will affect your
grade. Foreign language study is such that certain aspects of one's performance cannot be
judged by examinations, but rather by class performance. Therefore, 20% of your final grade
will be based upon daily class participation; effective class participation assumes preparation of
daily assignments before class.
Southwestern University will make reasonable accommodations for students with documented
disabilities. To arrange accommodations students should contact the Assistant Director of
Access and Academic Resources within the Center for Academic Success (Prothro Center room
120; phone 863-1286; e-mail carterk@southwestern.edu). Students seeking accommodations
should notify the Assistant Director of Access and Academic Resources at least two weeks
before services are needed. It is the student's responsibility to discuss any necessary
accommodations with the appropriate faculty member.
Note. Make-up exams are the exception, not the rule, and will not be granted automatically.
Make-ups must be arranged with the instructor in advance of the regularly scheduled time, and
will be given (or not) at the discretion of the instructor.
