Chemistry Lab Safety Rules

Main Rules:

1.

Always make choices in the lab that are safe for you and the class.

2.

Listen and follow all directions (verbal or written) from your teacher. If you have a question about the lab procedures always ask for clarification.

3.

Wait until the teacher gives you permission to go to the lab and begin the experiment.

4.

Do NOT bring food or drinks into the lab.

5.

Only do experiments your teacher has planned for you.

6.

Come to the lab prepared. Read thru lab procedures and complete pre-lab questions. Completion of pre-lab questions is your ticket into the lab.

7.

Do not act silly when in the lab because it can cause accidents.

8.

When finished with a lab, clean up your equipment and lab bench. Also, wash your hands with soap and water before leaving to the next class.

9.

Make sure you know where the bandage kit, fire blanket, fire extinguisher, safety shower, and exits are in the lab.

10.

Know what to do if there is a fire drill. We need to extinguish flames from

Bunsen burners before exiting the classroom. We will proceed to the nearest stairwell and exit out the doors behind the stairs.

11.

Follow teacher’s directions on throwing away chemical waste so that toxic chemicals are NOT poured down the drains.

12.

Watch your experiment at all times.

13.

If needed equipment or chemicals are not present in the lab, ask teacher.

Students are NOT allowed to go to the chemical stock room unsupervised.

Clothing:

14.

Do not wear baggy clothing that might get caught on fire.

15.

Always wear closed-toe shoes (tennis shoes) to the lab NOT sandals.

16.

Long hair should be tied up and dangling jewelry removed prior to entering the lab.

17.

Students will wear goggles when chemicals, heat, and glass materials are used in the lab.

Accidents and Injuries:

18.

Tell the teacher first if any kind of accident or injury (small or large) happens in the lab.

19.

If your skin gets exposed to chemicals from lab rinse only with water for several minutes.

20.

If chemicals splash in your eye(s), you will need to rinse for a couple of minutes with water from safety shower located in Ms. Paisley’s room (neighbor). *This should NEVER happen because you are wearing safety goggles in the lab.

Using Chemicals:

21. All chemicals need to be thought of as dangerous in the lab.

22.

Do not return extra chemicals to their original bottles.

23.

Do not take chemicals out of the lab.

24.

When detecting the smell of a chemical slowly waft the chemical toward your nose with your hand. It is important NOT to take a big whiff of the chemical’s fumes because some chemicals have a very strong/toxic smell.

25.

If a chemical you are working with is known to give off a pungent smell, you might be required to work in the fume hood, so you do NOT breathe too much of it in at one time.

Using Glass Materials and Equipment

26.

Do not pick-up broken glass. Notify instructor and then clean it up with a broom and dust pan. Dispose carefully in the lab trash can.

27.

Look at glass material before using it to make sure it is not chipped or cracked.

If equipment or wires are damaged do not use and notify instructor.

Heating Substances:

28.

Be careful around a heated burner. Do not reach over the burner because you might get burned. Also do not lay anything close to the burner that might catch on fire.

29.

Do not point heated glassware at yourself or others.

30.

Remove hot glassware from a heated burner with tongs NOT your hands. *Be mindful of when you are heating glassware because you could easily get burned if not attentive to instructions. Heated glassware will NOT look different.
