Brief Synopsis:
Nora is a young woman acting as a housewife for her husband Torvald. Torvald has a prominent
position at the bank, and as such Nora and Torvald live in high society. Everything seems idyllically
perfect, however, when Krogstad confronts Nora and begins to blackmail her to keep his position at the
bank, the idyllic home slowly crumbles. With the return of Nora’s childhood friend, the imminent death
of Dr. Rank, and the continuous pressure from Krogstad, Nora begins to question who she is and what
her role is in life.
Characters:
 Nora: Nora is a young woman with three children, who is married to Torvald Helmer. Initially
appearing as a naïve and carefree girl, she develops throughout the play to demonstrate she has
some secrets of her own. The person playing Nora will need to be able to handle the depth and
subtle changes of the character throughout the show.
 Torvald Helmer: Nora’s husband, who has recently been promoted at his job as a banker.
Torvald is obsessed with appearances and his career. He treats Nora as a child, in both a kind
and patronizing manner. He sees the home as a woman’s place, and his own as a breadwinner.
 Krogstad: A lawyer who went to school with Torvald and holds a subsidiary position at the bank.
A complex character; he is both despised and pitied. He will do whatever it takes to get what he
wants, whether or not it is ethical. He shares a secret with Nora.
 Ms. Linde: Nora’s childhood friend who has fallen on hard times. Seen as antithetical to Nora,
she is worldly and worn where Nora is naïve and carefree.
 Dr. Rank: Torvald’s best friend. He is terminally ill and has accepted his fate. He is largely
unconcerned with society’s opinions of him.
 Bob, Emmy, and Ivar: Nora’s children. The children will either be played by children, or by
“young looking” students.
 Anne-Marie: The nanny of the house. She will be played by the female understudy.
Understudy Policy:
The production staff will choose one male and one female understudy for this production. The
understudies will be responsible for learning the necessary roles and standing in for cast members in the
event of illness or other absence. Please check the indicated spot on the information form if you would
not like to be considered for the understudy position. Note: This will not affect your likeliness of being
chosen for a cast position.
The female understudy will also be playing Anne-Marie. Nora will also be doubling as AnneMarie. If both understudies know their respective understudy parts by show time, there will be an open
show during brush up week. Anne-Marie will play Nora, Nora will play Anne-Marie, and the male
understudy will play Torvald.
Final Notes:
Please keep in mind that you are a solution to our problems. By providing honest and accurate
information on the following sheet and being yourself at the audition, you let us find the best possible
solution that works in everyone’s favor.
That being said, relax and have fun with the audition process. We want to know the person that
you are and not the person that you think we want to see. If you are not cast it is nothing personal. It
only means that we found a slightly better fit for the part. We would like to encourage you to get
involved in any of the other fantastic crews that will make this show possible.
