Around The Table
Ruth Townsend – Office of Equity and Diversity Services

The soft roll-out of the online sexual harassment training is underway. Faculty who are
up for tenure cannot do the online training, they must complete the training in person.

Assistive Technologies had courses offered during B.Y.T.E week, although they were not
well attended. Please let Kory Singleton know if you are interested in offering this
training at the Arlington Campus.

Chuck Fanshaw, Director of Facilities Planning announced that he is leaving the university
at the end of February.
Karen Newman – School of Law

A sprinkler pipe burst in the stairwell where the construction broke through to connect
Hazel Hall and Founder’s Hall. There was a flood that impacted the stairwell and atrium.
Police and Physical Plant responded quickly and the emergency response plan worked
well. The building was cleared in under 5 minutes. The leak was not toxic as originally
feared and students, faculty and staff were permitted to re-enter the building.
Housekeeping has striped the floors in the atrium and will refinish them but the walls
have staining and will need repair as well. Law classes were able to start the next day
with no adverse impact.


Richard Kelsey is the new Assistant Dean of Management and Planning at the Law
School. He is a Mason alum, former BOV member and former president of the School of
Law Alumni Association.
Jennifer Torney – School of Public Policy (SPP)

SPP Spring semester classes start on January 19, 2010; and, orientation is this weekend.

The search continues for a new Dean for the School of Public Policy. Four candidates
have been identified for interviews.
Judy Meade - Police

Monday is a holiday and the university will be closed. The Law Library and the Mercatus
Center will both be open. As a result, Hazel Hall will be open on Monday but the Original
and Truland buildings will be closed.
Amanda Harrison – Arlington Administration

Human Resources will be offering the “FISH Philosophy” customer service training on
Friday, January 15, 2010 in the Original building, room 268 at 10:00am. Please go to the
HR website to register.

Fiscal Services will have a presence at the Arlington campus on the first Tuesday of each
month. They will be located in the Original building room 242. The will have walk-in
service available and beginning in February will offer training as well. Please watch “This
Week at Arlington” for more details.
Colleen Morretta – Mercatus/I.H.S/JBC

On February 2, 2010 the Mercatus Center will be holding a panel discussion and
reception entitled “Challenging Institutional Analysis and Development: The Bloomington
School” Social Change Project. The lecture will be from 4:00pm – 5:30pm in Hazel Hall
room 121 with a reception following in the atrium until 7:00pm. The panelist are Elinor
Ostrom, Nobel Laureate, 2009; Peter Boettke, Vice President for Research, Mercatus
Center; and, Paul Dragos Aligica, Senior Research Fellow, Mercatus Center. Please go to

Jennifer Gantt – Arlington Administration

Jennifer and Karen Pirhalla have been monitoring REIT Management’s progress following
their meeting in November – and are follow-up on promised action items. The university
was informed that several improvements/repairs were to be made to the property prior
to the end of the calendar year. As of this morning the additional exterior lights have not
been installed. In addition, the doors that were to become ADA compliant have not been
completed as well as the signage outside the garage entrance.

Facilities has the work order to install the floor directories in the Truland building. The
lobby directory had an additional change, CREC is leaving the university in March.
Jennifer is coordinating with FAST Signs on installation.

Following a lengthy software upgrade, Photo ID is back in operation.
Sandy Ebron - Facilities

The directories should be installed on the 2nd, 3rd and 7th floors of the Truland building
this afternoon


Beth Roszkowski – Arlington Campus Libraries

The instruction schedule for the library will be completed this week.

LeRoy LeFleur is considering putting together several focus groups in the upcoming
semester to discuss what people want from the Library when we move to Founder’s Hall.
LeAnn Pittman – Classroom Technologies

Classroom Technologies will start Sunday hours again on January 23, 2010.

The procedure for checking out equipment for classes has changed. There is no longer a
form to be printed out, the information is now online. Equipment for events must still go
through Events Management.
Anna Rabinowitz – University Information

Anna is currently updating the Hours of Operation document on the website. Please go
to the website to confirm your department’s information is correct. Anna will be in
contact with departments whose hours have not been confirmed for the Spring semester.

If you have new faculty members in your department, please send an email to
arlcamp@gmu.edu with their names and email addresses so they can be added to the
campus listserv.

If you would like University Information to post fliers for any upcoming events just send
a copy of the flier to 2G1 and we will be happy to post for you.
Amy Cavazos - IET

IET has Saturday classes on January 30th and February 6th.
Karen Tai – Events Management

If you have an event taking place after 4:20pm in the upcoming semester, Events
Management will not be able to confirm room reservations until after the drop/add date
because the Provost Office will not release classrooms for alternate scheduling until after
that date. The exception to this restriction are rooms 242 and 329.
Benn Crandall – Auxiliary Enterprises

Due to the snow back in December the Patriot Center had to cancel a show for the first
time in 25 years. Five showings of the Sesame Street show were cancelled. But, the
UFC fight was a huge success and made up for the cancelled shows. The university is
hoping UFC will bring more fights to the Patriot Center. Please note, faculty and staff
receive a discount on tickets to Patriot Center events. Currently you must go to the box
office in person and present your Mason ID. The box office is working to change that
policy so that you can purchase tickets online.

The Mail Services RFP goes out on March 1st.
Lori Cohen – University Life/Community Relations

A-SPAN (Arlington Street People Assistance Network) is currently in the running for a
$1Million grant from Chase Bank on Facebook. APIL will be sponsoring the group to be
on campus to give students and opportunity to vote for A-SPAN, more details to come.
Amanda Martin – IACR

ICAR is holding their Spring Semester orientation today. This is the first time ICAR has
had new students start in the Spring semester.
Ann O’Dell, Center for Global Studies

CGS will hold a spring conference in DC at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

CGS received a new grant from Open Society Institute.

CGS has awarded their faculty grants for 2010.
Karen Pirhalla – Arlington Administration

Discussion was held on any “lessons learned” from the December major snow storm.
Two key issues were brought up:
o Announcements for Sunday classes/events lacking
o Communication on last minute SoL changes

Arlington Administration is working with TIAA-CREF and Fidelity to arrange for them to
be on campus to provide one-on-one sessions with faculty and staff. TIAA-CREF will be
on campus on February 4th, May 6th, August 5th and November 4th from 9:00am to
4:00pm. Fidelity will be on campus on April 4th. If you would like to see Fidelity on
campus more, please contact Amanda Harrison.

A preliminary Spring 2010 Arlington Schedule of Classes listing is now available from the
Registrar’s office. Arlington Administration is happy to email copies to anyone interested,
(contact Amanda Harrison). Please be aware that the information will not be final until
after the spring census.

The Environmental Health and Safety office is looking at March for the annual fire alarm
inspections as well as for holding fire drills at Arlington.

SPP Orientation - Josh Cantor confirmed that George Ronetz from Federal Parking will
have an attendant on-site for the SPP orientation this weekend.

Arlington Campus Parking Permits are now available for sale on-line.

IRR will start to use a new Course Evaluation form for Spring 2010. It’s basically the
same form except the wording on some of the questions has changed. Also, the form
has a new “brownish” color to distinguish it from the former red forms. IRR is asking
that units recycle or throw out the old red forms.

