Introduction
 English is divided into 5 subcategories:
 Reading Comprehension
 Writing
 Vocabulary
 Grammar
 Spelling
 Report Cards will show an individual grade for each
subcategory within English as well as a weighted
grade.
Introduction
 The weighted grade is proportioned according to the
scale below:





Reading Comprehension (30%)
Writing (25%)
Vocabulary (20%)
Grammar (15%)
Spelling (10%)
 The percentages next to each subject area also
roughly indicate the proportion of instruction within
a given marking period.
Themed Units
 Although English is divided in such a way, all 5 of the
subcategories are very much intertwined within a
given marking period through the use of a “themed
unit” system.
 Using the Understanding By Design curriculum
planning strategy, four separate units have been
designed for each marking period.
 This strategy connects the 5 subcategories into one
cohesive unit.
