English IV AP Literature/Dual Credit Advanced Placement: English 1501 Dual Credit: English 1501 D Instructor: Mrs. Susan Mann Classroom: 3207 Email: smann4@neisd.net Planning period: 6th Tutoring times: Tuesdays 8:00 AM and Thursdays 4:10 PM and by appointment First Grading Period The Search for Meaning and Happiness Required Readings: Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (summer reading – student copy) Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (summer reading – student copy) Selections from James Joyce’s Dubliners (issued in class) Selected readings from The Bedford Introduction to Literature (course issued text) Selected readings from Reading Critically Writing Well (provided online) Student choice: novels for fun reading Student choice of 4 current news magazines The first Friday of each month will be dedicated to students reading a choice novel of appropriate reading level and material. At least one full novel must be read by the date of the one-pager towards the end of the grading period. Students are encouraged to bring in their own copies or check out books from the library or classroom. E-readers are allowed. Students may not work on other academic work on First Fridays. Becoming lifelong readers occurs only when students have time to read for pleasure. The First Friday Fun Reading days are meant to foster such reading appreciation. In addition to fun reading choice works, students will read a total of 4 news magazines cover to cover. Brief creative writing pieces will be completed for each issue, and these pieces as well as an MLA formatted works cited page will be submitted towards the end of the grading period. Specific instructions will be given to students regarding the creative reflections. Suggested deadlines for each issue are provided on the syllabus; however, students will only be accountable for handing in the completed collection on the final due date. Students may use news magazines such as The Week, Newsweek, and Time. They must be current for the weeks during which the issues are read. Students may use library magazines or periodicals brought from home or provided in the classroom. The focus for these readings is to keep students informed of current issues and to make real-world connections with the topics and themes discussed in literature. Classroom Materials: A binder or large folder for keeping all notes, handouts, and written work composition notebook (please do not use wire spiral journals) 3-4 pocket folders with brads blue or black ink pens; #2 pencils (not mechanical) Most assignments in class will be turned in at the start of class, whether they are handwritten or typed in MLA format (see “Essential Usage” slideshow on web page). Papers submitted to turnitin.com will be due by 10 PM the day hard copies are handed in as well. Logically, students should complete submissions online the evening before hard copies are due. This gives students a full day to sort out any technology issues regarding submitting. A late hard copy and/or online submission will result in a 20% grade penalty.
