Students should be able to draw and label an ear notch if given a diagram to draw on. Show a video that is saved onto Dropbox from YouTube. Explain why ear notching is crucial to the swine industry and such an important form of identification. Show and explain the ear notching system and what each notch signifies and what number. Explain which ear represents the litter and which one represents the pig number. Show how you read and add the numbers together to get the correct ear notch. Start by giving the students some simple ear notches and work on them together as a class. Give them pictures of pig faces with ear notches to practice by themselves. Hand out pictures of pig faces without ear notches and write ear notches on the dry erase board and have the students draw the notches themselves. To test the students on this lesson, have them play board races where they will either have to read ear notches or draw ear notches. Also, to show that they understand how ear notching relates to the swine industry and its importance, have them write a two page report describing its significance. Have the students save the report on Dropbox and then have them submit the report via Dropbox.
