SUPER 8 WEEK #1: BIRTH In 1996, the Hubble Telescope found _____________________________________________________ In 2004, the Hubble Telescope found _____________________________________________________ Turns out, there are more than ______________________________ in the universe Genesis 1:1-2, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” The book of Genesis is not concerned with __________ things happened, but it is very concerned with __________ made them. The timeless message from Genesis is this: __________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ What God created: Days 1-3 Days 4-6 1--____________________________ 4--_________________________________ 2--____________________________ 5--_________________________________ 3--____________________________ 6--_________________________________ Genesis 1:26-27, “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Being made in the image of God signifies humans can do these God-demonstrated activities: 1—God ____________________________ 2—God ____________________________ 3—God____________________________ Genesis 3:1-8, “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.” Eve’s sin was threefold: 1—Eve d__________________ the word of God 2—Eve d__________________ the command of God 3—Eve d__________________ the power of God Upon the Fall of Man, four significant changes occurred in creation: 1—There was a loss of ____________________________________ (v.7) 2—There was a loss of ____________________________________ (v.8) 3—There was a loss of ____________________________________ (vv.22-23) 4—We are now all born with a ___________________________________ (Rom 5:12ff) Genesis 3:19, “But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’” The effects of the Curse: 1—To the serpent: ________________________________________________ (v.14) 2—To the woman: ________________________________________________ (v.16) 3—To the man: ___________________________________________________ (vv.17-19) Genesis 3:15, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers, he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” As God clothed Adam and Eve with the skin of an animal, an important principle is given: Where there is _________ there is always ___________________ and the __________________ of _____________________. Genesis 6:5, “The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.” The first few pages of Genesis make it very clear: The solution to restoring mankind to the kind of relationship it had with God in the garden will _____________________________________________. In the first few chapters of the Bible, many things changed. But what didn’t change was _____________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ The best way to continue God’s grand vision was to _____________________ a ___________________ The Covenant Begins Genesis 12:1-4a, “The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.’ So Abram left…” When God called Abraham, he _________________ _____________________ Hebrews 11:8, “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” There’s a phrase that almost always leads to disaster: _________________________________________ As Abram and Sarai tried to “help” God carry out his plan, Abram conceived a child with _____________, who eventually gave birth to a boy named ____________________. His nation eventually became the Nation of _______________. This was not God’s plan. Genesis 17:1-11, “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty[a]; walk before me and be blameless. 2 I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.” 3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram[b]; your name will be Abraham,[c] for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 The whole land of Canaan, where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.” 9 Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.” All of Jewish history from this point on is based upon this one covenant, and it will be reiterated many times throughout the Old Testament. A few highlights: 1) The covenant contains a ___________________________ 2) The covenant contains a ___________________________ 3) The covenant contains a ___________________________ This is a conditional covenant: if you want to be blessed, understand that ______________________ only comes through ______________________________. Exactly a year later, Abraham and Sarah have a child, _________________________, whose name literally means _____________________________. The Test of Faithfulness Genesis 22:2, “Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” What was the point? Isaac’s Dysfunctional Family Genesis 25:24-26, “When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. 25 The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau.[a] 26 After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob.[b] Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.” Genesis 25:27-34, “The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was a quiet man, staying among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[a]) 31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.” 32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?” 33 But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.” Jacob becomes the rascal of Genesis! Yet, in a crazy twist, God _________________________. Jacob’s name later becomes ______________________. Genesis 25:24-26, “When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.
