MAJOR EVENTS WOULD MARK THE
PERIOD?
Europe
 Name that historians gave to the period between the
defeat of the last western Roman emperor and the
beginning of the Renaissance.
 Europe was formed during this time as well as a
Christian culture
 Time of immense achievement
 Germanic people
 What we would call today Germany and Scandinavia
 Romans called them “barbarians” (meaning
foreigners) and considered them crude
 1st piece of art found during this time
 Grave of unknown East Anglian king was found
 Gold and enamel purse cover was found
 Animal style- often had interlace, patterns formed by
interwoven ribbons and bands
 Monks not only copied texts but also illuminated them
with illustrations and decorations
 Gospel of Mark- used animal style and interlace to
announce this book of the bible
