place, thing or idea.
– It always begins with a capital letter.
• A common noun names any one of a
group of persons, places, things or ideas.
– It generally is not capitalized.

Concrete and Abstract Nouns
• A concrete noun names a person, place, or
thing that can be perceived by one or more of
the senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell).
• An abstract noun names an idea, a feeling, a
quality, or a characteristic.

Singular and Plural Nouns
• A singular noun names one person, place,
thing or idea.
– Example: wish, box, dog, ring
• A plural noun names two or more

Forming Plural Nouns
• Add s to most singular nouns to make the plural
form.
– Example: uncle--uncles
• Add es to singular nouns that end in sh, ch, s, ss, or
x to make the plural form.
– Example: lunch--lunches, boss--bosses
• If a noun ends with a consonant and y, change the
y to i and add es to make the plural form.
– Example: balcony—balconies
• If a noun ends with a vowel and y, add s to make
the plural form.
– Example: display--displays
