Identify ELs 2. Determine proficiency levels 3. Assess progress ■ Differentiated grade bands: – K-1, 2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 ■ Four domains: – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking ■ Two types of CELDT: – 1. Initial CELDT: first time exam for students who indicate on their home language survey that they speak a language other than English – 2. Annual CELDT: yearly exam for ELs to measure progress until they are reclassified CELDT Results ■ After students take both the initial and annual CELDT, they are assigned a level for each of the four domains (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) ■ Each student is assigned an overall CELDT level based on the average of the levels of the four domains – K-1 is a weighted average of all four domains (45% each speaking and listening, 5% each reading and writing) – 2-12 is an average of all four domains (25% each domain) ■ – – – – – CELDT Levels 1. Beginning 2. Early Intermediate 3. Intermediate 4. Early Advanced 5. Advanced ■ IFEP: Initial Fluent English Proficient ■ RFEP: Reclassified Fluent English Proficient ELD Program ■ Students who score 1-3 (Beginning, Early Intermediate, Intermediate) on their CELDT will receive pull-out ELD services. ■ Students who score 4-5 (Early Advanced, Advanced) on their CELDT will be monitored by ELD teacher. They may receive some push-in ELD services. ■ Students will be grouped according to their grade level, CELDT score, and individual needs. ■ Students will be working with Ms. Blatchley as well as Ms. Phung, the full-time ELD instructional assistant. ■ Students will work on basic English language skills, reading comprehension, idioms and nuances, and many other ELD skills. ■ ELD curriculum will focus on PBL (project-based learning), TPR (Total Physical Response), vocabulary building, strengthening writing skills, and oral language. ■ ELD teacher will collaborate with classroom teacher to support classroom curriculum. How can your child “graduate” from ELD? ■ Redesignation/ Reclassified Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) ■ We have several criteria for full reclassification. Students must meet all of the following: 1. CELDT scores of Level 4 (Early Advanced) or 5 (Advanced) 2. Report Card Grades of C or above 3. Standardized Test scores of Proficient 4. Writing Sample of Level 3 Bridging 5. Student Oral Language Observation Matrix score of 25 or above ■ Students are monitored for the next two years to ensure they continue making progress. Attendance and Expectations ■ Attendance: If your child will miss school, please phone the office between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and indicate the reason for the absence. To report your child’s absence, call 626-299-7080. Please make every effort for your child to be in school each day. Our state funding is based upon students’ actual daily attendance. The school loses money every day your child is absent for any reason including illness. If you are planning a short trip, please plan it for school holidays. ■ Expectations: Come every day and come on time. Students are responsible for remembering to come to ELD (their teachers may remind them, but may also forget). Come with an attitude ready to learn. Complete all assignments. Grades and Homework ■ Our district’s new standards based grading system will be introduced this year. New report cards will be rolled out by classroom teachers and are aligned to state standards. ■ https://drive.google.com/a/smusd.us/file/d/0B6WtjYG0M95rcFBMZUp2VFlpeVE/vi ew ■ Grades: Each English Learner will receive a grade for ELD given by the ELD teacher. ■ Homework: Students will be given some homework throughout the year, although it will not be on a consistent basis. Their primary focus should be on completing their general education class homework. However, when ELD homework is assigned, students are expected to complete it on time. They will revise and redo for accuracy and practice. Homework Help ■ Invitations have been sent out to all Fourth and Fifth Grade ELs ■ 8:00 – 8:30am ■ Monday – Friday ■ Room 35 ELD ■ Ms. Blatchley and Ms. Phung ■ All are invited, but this is not mandatory. Students and families may choose to come whenever they feel necessary. What can you do to help support your children? ■ Read with them daily! ■ Read in English and/or native language. ■ Take them to the library or book store. ■ Talk about your books, movies, television, vacations, and experiences. ■ Volunteer in your child’s classroom. ■ Help your child with their homework. ■ Keep a journal/diary with your child. ■ Have your child participate in extracurricular activities such as sports or learning to play musical instruments. ■ Have your child interact with other children as much as possible.
