Dear Teachers, Department Chairs, Counselors, Principals, APG’s and APC’s: Once again this summer the Whittier Union High School District is very fortunate to partner up with the Jaime Escalante Program from East Los Angeles College. The classes will coincide with our own summer school schedule starting on Monday June 9th and culminating of Thursday July 17th. All the classes will be taught at Pioneer High School. The program will go for six weeks with classes being held Monday thru Thursday. Our classes will begin at 8:00 am and finish at 1:30 pm but the Escalante classes will begin at 7:50 am and finish at 2:00 pm. The Escalante Program will be offering Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Math Analysis (Trig) taught by their own teachers, and assessed with Common Core instruction and Exams. Applications will be distributed by Christiana Kraus next Monday at the APC meeting and the APC’s will then be in charge of distributing them to math teachers and counselors. Each school will receive 100 applications initially, but if more are needed they will be provided. The application consists of a yellow cover letter with all the instructions with the due deadline which is May 1 at PHS by 3:00 pm. The second page is a buff color card which enrolls the student into the ELAC summer non-credit course. What they mean by non-credit is that upon completion of this course the students will not receive college credit but may receive high school credit if they earn a good grade and wish for it to appear in their transcripts. Students will need to complete all the information and sign at the bottom with the date. The next page is a white Supplemental Application for Admission which requires the student to sign once again and their parents to provide their consent with their signature. In the School Consent section please leave it blank as I will stamp all the applications with our school official seal and have our Principal Monica Oviedo’s signature stamped on it. The next white page is the only one that is back to back and it also needs to be completed on both sides. The front side requires another signature and the back requires a social security number if the student has one. The last page is yellow, and this page is the one we use as our emergency information sheet. Please be sure to mark the appropriate box for the desired course to be enrolled in towards the bottom of the page. All these pages need to be completed in black or blue ink. Please check every application for completeness because if anything is missing, or the signatures don’t match, the application will be revoked and sent back and the student will not be enrolled in the class. My apologies in advanced for the long instructions but ELAC is very picky about the information they input to their system and I am trying to avoid all the future hassles. All the applications need to be submitted to the Pioneer High School Curriculum office no later than 3:00 pm on Thursday May 1. The best thing is for you to instruct the parents to bring the applications personally to Pioneer High School so it can be checked and also so that they can pay their $35 fee for the required textbooks. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch will receive their applications at this time so that they can receive free lunch during the summer. Thank you for helping out with the process. I look forward to having a great summer program for all our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at extension 5200. Sincerely, Javier González Pioneer Math Academy Coordinator
