Believe Study Guide
Chapter 24: Self Control
Personal Study
Last week you examined the virtue of peace. Maybe you were challenged to live at peace in a
particular area of struggle – with God, other, or yourself. This week before your group meeting,
read Believe, Chapter 24: Self-Control. Then allow the Scripture to enter your mind as you
evaluate your ability to be self-controlled.
Memorizing Scripture is a valuable discipline for all believers to exercise. Spend a few minutes
each day committing this week’s Key Verses to memory.
Key Verse: For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing
us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously
and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and
the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus
– Titus 2:11-13
Key Idea: Self-Control is not always easy, but it’s always worth it!
Read - Note any verses or insights God gives you as you spend time with Him this week. The
more you reflect on God’s word and spend time with Him, the more it will impact your life!

Discuss - LifeGroup Meeting
Welcome!
If there are any new members in your group, take a moment to introduce yourselves to each
other before watching the video. Then, feel free to get started!
Getting Started
Begin your discussion by reciting the Key Verses and Key Idea together as a group. On your first
attempt, use your notes if you need help. On your second attempt, try to state them completely
from memory.

Group Discussion
LifeGroup Video Question – Coming soon.
1. What have you learned or what insight has God given you this week as you’ve spent
time with Him through your daily Bible reading, Believe reading and in prayer? What
was the most impactful thing you heard from Pastor Darryl in this weekend’s message?
2. Read 2 Peter 1:5-11 and discus how each character trait in verses 5-7 builds on the
previous trait. As we focus on self-control this week, what traits are self-control
dependent upon? What benefits does this passage say we receive from developing
Godly character?
Love Like Jesus
Do you think self-control comes naturally or is it a learned process? What are some personal
examples of how you have grown stronger in the area of self-control? Do you think the
development of self-control is for your benefit or for the benefit of others? What do Romans
14:12-21 and 1 Corinthians 8:12-13 say about this?
Intentional Intimacy
In question two above, we saw that self-control is dependent on growing in knowledge and
moral excellence. What are some different ways you can accomplish this growth in today’s
hectic world?
Fully Surrendered
What visible attributes do you think are found in a person who has self-control? What is one
area that you struggle with maintaining self-control in your life. What are some principles from
Hebrews 12:1-2 that could help you in this area?
Experience More
Experiencing more involves going outside your comfort zone to grow closer to Christ. How
comfortable is it for you to hold others accountable? Are you willing to experience more by
holding others in your group accountable? Are you willing to experience more by allowing
others in your group to hold you accountable?
Closing Prayer
Close your time together with prayer. Share your prayer requests with one another. Ask God to
help you put this week’s Key Idea into practice.
