SMARTER objectives
When goal setting, coaches and personal trainers will use SMARTER
objectives to set their goals
S – SPECIFIC
M – MEASUREABLE
A – ACHIEVEABLE
R – REALISTIC
T – TIME-RELATED
E – EXCITING
R - RECORDED
S is for Specific
“Specific” means
that you have to
say what you
want to do, very
clearly.
Specific Targets..
“I want to lose
weight” is NOT
specific.
“I want to lose 4
kilos” is
specific.
M is for Measurable
Measurable targets tell
you exactly what you
need to do to succeed.
“I want to be able to run
800 metres faster” is
not measurable. How
much faster do I want
to be able to go?
A Measurable Target
“I want to run 800
metres in 2.5 minutes”
is measurable.
If I run 800 metres in 4
minutes, I know I
haven’t succeeded yet!
A is for Achievable.
“I’m going to earn £3,000 by
next week” is probably
NOT achievable – unless
your job is robbing banks!
Neither is:
“I am going to run 800
metres in 2 seconds.”
An Achievable Target
An achievable target
has to be something
you can do.
“I am going to read for
10 minutes every
day this week” is
probably achievable
for most people.
R is for Realistic
What I’m going to do
needs to help me to
get what I want.
If I want to get fit, finding
out about famous
footballers won’t help.
A Realistic Target
It would be
more useful to
do some
football
practice every
day!
T is for Timed
If I don’t know how much
time I have, I don’t
know when to take
action.
How hard do I have to
train?
When does my work have
to be completed?
A Timed Target
“I want to be able to
run 800 metres in
2.5 minutes by
August 5th, this
year” is a timed
target.
Now I can arrange a
training routine.
E is for Exciting
• Making the
program/target
enjoyable will
mean you want
to do it!
• What could be
an exciting
target?
R is for Recorded
• Setting targets is
difficult if you are not
sure when you are
improving.
• It is important to
record them as well
as recording progress

Individual needs
Before planning your personal exercise programme, you need to assess the
abilities and needs of the individual it is being designed for.
You need to consider:
Age – some activities may be inappropriate
for particularly young or particularly old
performers.
Current level of health – a clean bill of health
is required. If you are recovering from an
injury, this will affect the design of your
programme.
Individual needs
Current level of fitness – does the performer exercise already? Are they generally fit?
Are they overweight or overfat?
What their aims are – do they just want to become healthier? Do they want to improve
in the sport that they participate in? Do they have a particular event that they want to
prepare for?
What forms of exercise they enjoy doing – when
you design a programme, it is best to include
activities that the performer enjoys or there is a
chance they may cease training due to boredom
or lack of interest.
Some people prefer
team sports.
SHORT TERM
- SET OVER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME
- LIKELY TO BE ONE DAY TO ONE MONTH
- Example: Fernando Torres pulled hamstring will take a month to
recover. His short term goal is…………..
MEDIUM-TERM
- SHOULD GIVE PROGRESSIVE SUPPORT TOWARDS ACHIEVEMENT OF
LONG-TERM GOALS
- USUALLY DONE USING MINI GOALS (SHORT TERM)
- Example: Yohan Blakes medium goal was to win the Jamaican trials
to prepare for London 2012
LONG TERM
- WHAT THEY WANT TO ACHIEVE IN THE LONG TERM
- BEST WAY OF DOING THIS
- Example: Jessica Ennis competed in plenty of competitions but her
long term goal has always been London 2012
