MEMORANDUM FOR First City Rifle Corps, Recondo Candidates
SUBJECT: LETTER OF INSTRUCTION (LOI), RECONDO SCHOOL 11-12
1. Reference:
a. Recondo Training, TC 21-1, dated May 1973
b. Dismounted Patrolling, FM 21-75, dated January 1981
c. Physical Fitness Training, FM 21-20, dated January 1985
d. Map & Aerial Photograph Reading, SH 21-22, dated June 1985
e. Map Reading and Land Navigation, FM 21-26, dated May 1993
2. Purpose: To establish "Recondo Training" as a challenge to the Riflemen in all phases of training and build
his confidence as he meets each challenge. Recondo training will be physically and mentally demanding, also
to provide training in planning and operations of combat and reconnaissance operations. The course will
graduate highly trained, well-motivated riflemen who will share with his unit those skills and abilities acquired
during the Recondo course.
3. Objective:
a. Develop self-confidence, pride, self-determination, and the ability to lead and succeed.
b. Develop an appreciation of the importance of physical fitness.
c. Build Team spirit and unit esprit.
d. Develop an understanding for the need of teamwork and cooperation.
e. Develop an understanding for the need of organization and planning.
f. Develop in the student a sense of accomplishment.
g. Develop individual skills and competitive spirit.
4. General:
a. This letter sets forth procedures, requirements and instructions for FCRC Recondo School.
b. Recondo School will be held from 24 June 12 thru 8 July 12. The course will be conducted in two
phases; phase I will be at Van Nuys National Guard Armory, phase II is a field training Exercise (FTX),
and will be conducted at Holcomb Valley, Big Bear from 2- 7 July 12, Graduation 8 July 12.
5. Time Schedule: See Inclosure 1.
6. Transportation: Transportation to Van Nuys Armory and Big Bear will be provided by Recondo students
(POV).

7. Uniform:
a. Uniform for students will be class "C", ACU’s with appropriate headgear, and tan boots.
b. Field Uniform will be as mentioned in 5a, also with appropriate field equipment ie: pistol belt,
canteen w/cover & cup (2 if possible)(camelback), suspenders, sleeping bag, and rucksack.
c. PT uniform - shorts or sweats, white tee shirt without designs, and sneakers
d. Uniform for all instructors will be ACU’s with black tee shirt and berets.
8. Students:
a. Students will not wear any rank while attending the Recondo Course.
b. All students must be a member of the FCRC Post 124 explorer scouts.
c. All individual equipment will be provided by the student.
d. Students must pass all phases of training to be awarded the Recondo Tab.
e. Students must pass the APFT prior to attending “Recondo School”
9. Sequence of Events:
a. Phase I: This phase is primarily for physical fitness, to include a physical fitness test, consisting of 4
events:
1. Pull-up
2. Sit-up
3. Push-up
4. 2-mile run
The Recondo student must do a minimum of 60 points per event with a minimum overall score of 200
points, a minimum of 6 pull-ups. A make-up test may be taken at the end of phase I. Failure to pass the PT test
may result in not being awarded the Recondo Tab. During this phase is also the academic phase, consisting of
various subjects in patrolling. Physical conditioning will also be given. A final written test will be given,
failure to pass this test will result in not being awarded the Recondo tab.
b. Phase II: Practical Exercise (FTX) in patrolling will be the performance test for the course. Each
student will be given the opportunity to lead or assist in leading a patrol and will be graded on their
performance. Failure to receive a go on all graded areas of the exercise will result in not receiving the Recondo
Tab.
10. Cost: The cost while attending this school will be $100.00 for food during Phase 1, pay for your own food
while on the Field Training Exercise and monetary aid to drivers
11. Awards: Those Recondo students that have completed and passed all phases of Recondo Training will be
awarded the Recondo Tab. Graduation will be conducted on 8 July 2012.
