Spring Break Fitness Contest
For the first time, Burns Elementary School students in grades 2-5 will have an opportunity to compete in a
contest over spring break. This competition will encourage students to get some form of exercise during the
break away from school. In addition, family members of the students can participate as well.
Families plan different things over spring break. Some travel, others stay around Owensboro. No matter
where you are, exercise is possible. If the weather is pleasant, go outside. If conditions aren’t favorable for
play outside, exercise indoors. Hopefully the weather will be nice wherever you are.
Some pertinent information about the contest:
Each student and family member that decides to participate in the competition will keep a chart or table
documenting exercise. The information that needs to be included is the name of person exercising, type of
exercise, and duration (i.e. 30 min, 60 min). Here is an example of how the chart/table can look:
NAME

Gina Walker (mother)
EXERCISE

DURATION

Students are encouraged to engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise daily. The
types of activities are plentiful. Participating in sports such as baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball,
cheerleading, golf, bowling, tennis, gymnastics, and skating are great activities. Other exercise options include
dancing, swimming, cycling, hiking, running, walking, core strengthening, jump rope, lifting weights, and yoga.
Again, there are many options to choose from.
The competition will start on Saturday, March 30 and end on Sunday, April 7. Students should bring
documentation of exercise to school and give to Mr. Mills, physical education teacher at BES.
Any student/family that gets at least seven hours of moderate to vigorous exercise over the break will be
entered into a drawing for a prize.

+++NEWS FROM THE FIFTH GRADE+++
This article is part of a series of suggestions on how to incorporate math into your daily routines at
home. Below you will find strategies and activities to help improve your child’s mastery of basic
mathematics skills.
DON’T FORGET…COMPASS CLUB WILL BE MEETING THE NEXT THREE
TUESDAYS…Feb. 19, 26, and March 5!!(2:30 – 3:30)
Student Strategies and Activities For Improving Mathematics Skills:
Choose two or three of the following strategies that you are not already implementing, but would be willing to
do to help increase your child’s learning:
 Begin a shapes museum by collecting common objects that represent a variety of shapes and label the shapes;
for example, an empty oatmeal box is a cylinder and could represent a circle.
Memorize mathematics facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) while sitting in lines or
at a stop light.
Make up games using numbers to play with younger siblings or friends.
Start a family coin collection jar; keep track of the amount of money that is going into the jar by logging each
deposit on a table (this will help with adding decimals).
Create a journal or project of mathematics activities (EX: have your child help with any measuring activities
at home).
 Complete daily HOMEWORK assignments.
Study the concepts taught in your school at night, even if an assignment has not been given. WATCH
VIDEOS SENT HOME EACH EVENING TO RETEACH THE LESSON
 Study for tests.
Attend review sessions when these are offered after school. (Compass Club)
Ask questions when you don’t understand.
Be willing to do extra work (there is always an extra page of practice in the back of each math
chapter).
 Participate in mathematics enrichment activities.
Tutor a friend, brother, sister or younger student.
Be responsible for taking daily work home.
Check assignments and tests for mistakes before turning them in.
 Work slowly and carefully.
Just a reminder…mathwhizz.com is a program students can work on from home. There are lessons
provided and then a quiz to check for understanding. This program is to be worked INDEPENDENTLY
by your child! If he / she is introduced to a concept that is difficult, “HELPS” are provided in the
program.
Math is no different than anything else in the world: THE MORE YOU PRACTICE…THE
BETTER YOU ARE!!

Mrs. Stephanie’s Preschool
During the month of February our themes were Shapes, Valentines, Presidents and Dental
Health. The children had a lot of fun exchanging Valentines with each other. They were genuinely
excited to receive each and every little card and/or treat. Both AM and PM sessions were also given
the opportunity to see the play “Click Clack Moo” at the RiverPark Center. It was a very entertaining
show and our preschoolers were very well behaved. We are continuing to work on skills such as
recognizing and writing the alphabet, numbers/counting, and writing our names. That just names a
few of the skills that we consistently work on in our classroom. We are always very busy and our
preschoolers are such hard workers. We are extremely proud of all that they have accomplished so
far this year.

I do still need volunteers to help in the media center. I have started a project
that I can use extra help with. You can contact me at
linda.morgan@daviess.kyschools.us or by calling the school at 270-852-7170.
Have an awesome March and be sure to keep on reading!
Kindergarten has been very busy learning and celebrating. We celebrated our first 100
days in school! We had a lot of fun counting to 100, making 100 day necklaces, making 100
day hats, and making 100 day glasses. The teachers even surprised us with a big 100 day
banner to walk through! Here is a picture of Ms. Howell’s class with the banner.
We have also been learning about parts of speech. This month we have been discovering
adjectives. We now know that an adjective is a word that describes a noun. Here is a
picture of an activity that we did to learn about adjectives. It was a lot of fun!
