COMMUNICATIONS
LOCAL SITE SET-UP:
-Inventory Items in Fortress Pelican Case:
- Backhaul (White) Antenna
- WiFi (Black) Antenna
- Cat-5 cable
- Wingnuts
- Fortress
- Bracket
- Bolts
1. Identify top most pole of antenna mast (before setting up antenna) with guy wire collar
2. Attach Fortress below guy wire collar and secure with wingnuts, bracket, and bolts to collared
pole slightly below Antenna mast (offset Fortress to ensure guy wire clearance)
3. Securely attach Backhaul (Black) antenna and WiFi (White) antenna to Fortress
4. Attach Cat-5 cable found in Fortress pelican kit to Fortress. Un-roll and lay out flat. Be sure
cable does not kink.
Base station:
1. Remove front and back covers of case
2. Attach Fortress Cat-5 cable to base station
3. Attach Antenna Cat-5 cable to base station
4. Attach BGAN Cat-5 cable to base station
5. Attach Laptop Cat-5 cable to base station
6. Plug BGAN power cord into power strip on back of base station kit
7. Plug base station power cord into power cord from generator
8. Power ON with red switch (found on back of base station in upper right hand corner)
-Inventory for Laptop/BGAN case
- 2 laptops (+ 2 power cords)
- BGAN (+1 power cord)
- Dongle (291)
- 2 CAT-5 (white) cables can be found in zippered case on cover of base station case
BGAN:
-
Attach power cord from base station to BGAN
Attach corresponding Cat-5 cable from base station
Press Power button
Adjust and position to find satellite. Beeping will begin. Faster beeping corresponds to higher
signal strength
Press “OK” once connectivity is between 45-60 dbHz
Screen will read “READY” once connectivity is established.
Laptop:
- Attach power cord from laptop to power supply located on base station

Attach corresponding Cat-5 cable from base station
Insert dongle (291) into available USB port
Press Power button
LOCAL SITE TEARDOWN:
Laptop:
1. Shut down laptop by double clicking “POWER OFF” icon found on desktop
2. Remove dongle (291) and place back into pelican case
3. Detach power cord from base station and laptop and place in pelican case
4. Detach Cat-5 cable from base station and laptop and place in zippered pouch on front cover of
base station
5. Place laptop back into pelican case
BGAN:
1. Hold power button to power off
2. Ensure power is completely off (screen will appear blank) before storing
3. Detach Cat-5 cable from base station and BGAN and place in zippered pouch on front cover of
base station
4. Detach power cord from base station and BGAN and place under BGAN in pelican case
Base station:
1. Flip power button on back of base station to OFF position
2. Detach Cat-5 cables for Fortress Backhaul, laptop and BGAN
3. Detach Antenna RF Out cable
Fortress Backhaul:
1. After disassembling antenna, detach Cat-5 cable found on bottom of Fortress
2. Loosely roll cable ensuring no kinks
3. Unscrew Backhaul (black) antenna and WiFi (white) antenna from Fortress, place in pelican case
4. Unscrew wingnuts, bracket and bolts from pole
5. Reattach bracket, bolts and wingnuts to Fortress before storing in pelican case
6. Place Cat-5 cable on top of Fortress
REMOTE SITE SETUP:

- Bolts

Base station:

10. Attach Fortress Cat-5 cable to base station
11. Attach Antenna Cat-5 cable to base station
12. Plug base station power cord into power cord from generator
13. Power ON with red switch (found on back of base station in upper right hand corner)
Powerenz Battery:
1. Power cord for Powerenz Battery can be found in zippered pouch on front cover of base station.
2. Attach power cord to base station labeled “SOLAR POWER”
3. Attach opposite end to power socket on right side of Powerenz Battery
Solar-Power Monitor kit / Solar-power panels:
(Includes 2 power cords – battery to controller; controller to solar panels)
1. Attach one cable from Powerenz Battery to solar-power controller kit
2. Attach other cable from solar-power controller kit to solar blankets, aligning red with red and
black with black
3. Attach subsequent panels following same directions above
4. Once all connections are made, hold power button on Powerenz Battery to power on.
5. Green light will show when power is
REMOTE SITE TEARDOWN
Base Station:
1. Switch red power button (found on back of base station in upper right hand corner) to OFF
position
2. Detach RF OUT cable
3. Detach SOLAR POWER power cable
4. Detach Fortress Backhaul Cat-5 cable
Powerenz Battery:
1. Hold power button down for several seconds to power OFF
2. Green light will not appear when battery is turned off
3. Detach power cord and store in zippered pouch on front cover of base station
Solar-power controller:
1. Detach power cord from Powerenz Battery and solar-power controller
2. Detach power cord from solar-power controller and first solar panel
3. Store both of these power cables in solar-power controller kit
Solar panels:
1. Detach cables
2. Fold and secure panels
Fortress Backhaul:
1. After disassembling antenna, detach Cat-5 cable found on bottom of Fortress
2. Loosely roll cable ensuring no kinks
3. Unscrew Backhaul (black) antenna and WiFi (white) antenna from Fortress, place in pelican case
4. Unscrew wingnuts, bracket and bolts from pole
5. Reattach bracket, bolts and wingnuts to Fortress before storing in pelican case
6. Place Cat-5 cable on top of Fortress
