SNC2DE Physics Lab Test – March 2013
Name: _____________________________________
______/42
1. Mirror : STATION 1 _____ (10 marks)
NOTE: Mark which station you are at as the mirrors are different!





A mirror, candle and screen have been arranged on optical benches to allow the
position of images to be found. DO NOT MOVE THE RULER OR MIRROR DURING
THIS EXPERIMENT!
As carefully as possible, place the candle at the four positions, and find the image.
Record the position of the image in the table below.
Describe the image using SALT in each case.

2. Mystery Liquids (5 marks)
The beaker contains two unknown liquids. Do not shake or touch the liquids.
 Observe the beaker carefully from different directions, and decide which liquid has the
higher index of refraction.
 Record your choice and write a sentence or two to explain how you made your
decision.

a. Record two observations. Do not touch or mix the liquids. (C: 2 marks)
b. Which liquid (upper or lower) has the higher index of refraction? (A: 1 mark)
c. Explain how you decided. (A: 2 marks)

3. Determining focal length (5 marks)

You are to determine the focal length using a linear graph of 1/si (distance of image)
versus 1/so (distance of object) . Assume that you obtain the following data for object
distance so and si.
a. On the grid below, plot the points in the last two columns of the table above and
draw the best fit line through the points. (C-3 marks)

b. Calculate the focal length from the best-fit line. (TI: 2 marks)
4. Unknown Mirrors & Lenses (6 marks)
You are given two lenses and two mirrors.
For each lens, decide if it is a converging or diverging lens.
a. Record your choice onto the worksheet. (A: 1 mark)
b. Explain how you reached that decision.(C: 2 marks)
 For each mirror, decide if it is a concave or convex mirror.

6. Optical Instrument (5 marks)
 You are provided with: a selection of prisms, mirrors and a ray box with slits.
 Create a working model of a periscope.
 Once you are happy with your model, call over a teacher to check it off on your
worksheet. (A: 3 marks)
 In the space below, draw a ray diagram to represent your model. (C: 2 marks)

7. Security System (4 marks)

Your challenge is to design the security system in an art gallery using laser light. A
diagram of the art gallery is provided.


The laser may enter the art gallery from wherever you choose and in any direction
you choose.
The laser must bounce off all of the reflectors shown and finally reach the sensor.
 Record your answer on the diagram below and show the path of the laser. (C,A: 4 marks)
