Purpose: To interpret a major theme of the novel using effective textual support.
To interpret universal theme(s) through comparison and analysis of another work.
Rubric: 1) Student work clearly explains/interprets a major theme in the novel.
2) Student work effectively supports theme interpretation with examples from the text.
3) Student work demonstrates clear understanding of the identified theme through analysis of the novel and
through comparison and analysis of another work.
