He has to stop riding the horse so he can get a ride to school with his friend Johnny Collins. After school Tex gets a ride with Johnny and tells him to go right home so he can ride his horse. When Tex arrives home he finds his brother Mason home early. We learn that their father has left them and never writes. Tex learns that they are in financial difficulty and that Mason h as had to sell the horses to pay for food and electricity. Tex gets really mad. He and Mason get into a fight. Tex is beaten up pretty badly and decides he will search the countryside until he finds the horses. Johnny and his sister Jamie find h im and try to get him to go home. He keeps walking until Mason picks him up and brings him back home. Johnny and Jamie are at Tex=s house playing cards. They are shocked to see him so beaten up. Mason is upset about having beaten up Tex but he needed to sell the horses so he did not have to het a job and so he could stay on the basketball team and go to college.
