Chapter 5 Test
You Need To Know the Following:
d
t
2. Determine the difference between direct variation and partial variation.
3. Recall the following as it pertains to partial variation:
m = variable cost
y  mx  b

b = fixed cost, y-intercept
4. Determine an equation in the form y  mx  b for partial variation word problem.
5. Use a table of values to determine slope and the y-intercept & put it into the
 equation y  mx  b.
6. Determine slope from a graph by counting across the run and up the rise

7. Able to distinguish the differences
between rise and run.
8. Use an endpoint and the slope to find another endpoint.
9. 
Recall: a line rising from left to right has a positive slope
a line rising from right to left has a negative slope
10. Interpret slope as a rate of change from various word problems.
11. Determine first difference from a table  identify if the relation is linear or nonlinear.
12. Recall : slope = constant of variation = first differences = rate of change
13. y  mx  b where m = slope of the line and b represents the vertical intercept
14. Using a graph with co-ordinates you can solve for the following:
y  y1
m 2
x 2  x1
15. Rule of 4 can be used to represent a relation in 4 ways:
Using words [tell a story]
Using a diagram or a graph
Using numbers [a
table]
Using an equation
1. Calculating the Constant of Variation  k 
