AP Physics Teacher Course Overview Mrs. Erin Wissler AP Physics C: Mechanics offers students the opportunity to extend their understanding of the behavior of matter and energy through a second-year, calculus-based physics course equivalent to the college-level introductory physics for science and engineering majors. The course focuses on incorporating an emphasis on developing a conceptual understanding of the topics as well as applying skills to problem solving and laboratory based activities. Thomson Learning, Inc. 2015-2016 Page 1 Recommended Materials Notebook Graphing Calculator Grading Policy Tests – 50% -- will usually be given at the end of each chapter. You will be allowed to use your calculator and the AP equation sheet. The test will be constructed similar to the AP exam with both multiple choice and free response sections. Labs/Quizzes – 50 % - - Labs will be done in groups regularly through the year. I would strongly recommend that you keep an organized lab notebook. Many colleges will require documentation of your lab experience to receive full credit for the AP course. Quizzes will be given frequently to assess your progress in both homework and labs. Even though homework problems are not collected, homework is critical to the development of your problem solving skills which are essential to your success in this class. Resources Our class website will be updated regularly with copies of any materials given out in class and other resources that might be helpful to you throughout this year. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, I encourage you to come see me as soon as they arise so we can get you back on track as quickly as possible. I am available before school and during PRIME, please see me to arrange a time that works for both of us. Your student handbook contains the rules and regulations for Loudoun Valley High School, these expectations will be maintained in our class as well. Most importantly, you are expected to be safe and respectful of everyone in our class. 2015-2016 Page 2
