A Study of Angels (part 1) What are my beliefs about angels based upon? Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” 1. How do we know Angels exist? 2. Where Did Angels Come From/ Who or What are Angels? Created by God: • Nehemiah 9:6 "You are the LORD, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.” • Colossians 1:15-17 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. (16) For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through him and for him. (17) And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Do We Become Angels After We Die? - Matthew 22:23-30 -Luke 16:19-32 3. Are Angels Free Moral Agents? • Joshua 24:14-15 “Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. (15) And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." • Some Angels choose to do God’s Will: • Psalm 103:20-21 “Bless the LORD, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word! (21) Bless the LORD, all his hosts, his ministers, who do his will!” • Some Angels Choose Not To Do God’s Will: • Judge 1:6 “And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day…” • 2 Peter 2:4 “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment…” 4.What Do Angels Look Like? • Angels are spiritual beings: Hebrews 1:5-7 14 • Do they have wings? – Revelation 1:1; Revelation 14:6 – Isaiah 6:1-6 • Some Angels Appeared To Men In a Visible Form. – Used accordingly for God’s purpose. – This does not mean guarantee that it is what they look like. • Some appearances: Joseph (Matthew 1:20), Zacharias (Luke 1:5-13), Mary (Luke 1:26-31), Resurrection (Matthew 28:1-11), Ascension (Acts 1:9-11). 5. What Attributes/ Abilities do they have? Superhuman in Knowledge, but not all Knowing: • Luke 1:11-19 – Gabriel appeared to Zachrias and told him that his wife Elizabeth will have a son. • Acts 1:9-11 “And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. (10) And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, (11) and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." • Matthew 24:36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only…” Superhuman in Power, but not all Powerful: • 2 Kings 19:35-36 “And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. (36) Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went home and lived at Nineveh.” • Daniel 6:22 “My God sent his angel and shut the lions' mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm." • Matthew 28:2 “And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.”
